Hush Little Baby || Abby, Kenneth, Nicholas
It was three in the morning when a six month old started wailing. It startled Abby awake, he usually slept until at least five. It was far too early for him to be awake already. She quickly got out of the bed to check on him, his crying not ceasing even after a few minutes. When she got to the nursery, she saw a scared look on his face and his arms flailing.
"What's wrong, Nicholas? Hmm?" She asked worriedly, picking him up and bouncing him lightly. His diaper was clean and he'd been fed sometime before bed. "Did you have a bad dream? It's okay...it's okay...mummy's here." Abby whispered, kissing his head gently, sitting in a rocking chair. He seemed to calm at her touch, though the baby was still in tears. She rubbed his back and tried her best to soothe him until the cries turned to whimpers and hiccups.
"Hush, little baby, don't say a word, Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird. And if that mockingbird won't sing, Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring." She sang softly, hoping Nicholas would fall back asleep. "And if that diamond ring turns brass, Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass. And if that looking glass gets broke, Mama's gonna buy you a billy goat,"
Kenneth, who had heard both his son crying out and Abby getting out of bed, finally found himself tiptoeing to where his wife was to check on them. The door was half open and a smile appeared on his face when he heard the singing and gentle reassurances. He was so in love with this woman...and for her to think she'd be a terrible mother was so far-fetched it wasn't even funny. He leaned against the doorway and just watched, not even sure if she noticed him. She was too preoccupied, too concentrated. A smile sat on his face as she kissed Nicholas' head one more time after finishing the song and putting the sleeping baby back in his crib.
"You're the best mom ever," He suddenly spoke up, watching her jump. Ushering him and herself out the door, she shook her head. "Don't scare me like that, yeah?" "Sorry. It was just...it was beautiful, you know. Watching you." He told her, leaning in to kiss her cheek. "You're so good with him and your voice---I love you, Abby...and I love him." "Well good. Next time he cries, he's all yours." She knew it was unlikely. At least if he cried like that. That type of cry made her practically run to where he was. She just didn't want to accept the compliments. "I love both of my boys, though, of course." Abby mumbled, crawling back into the bed and cuddling close to her husband.
It was such a normal life and for once in her life, she wondered why she was ever scared of such a thing.
