Summary: “Do you two know each other?” he asked, aiming the question more at his servant than you. “Oh, not really,” Merlin stammered. “Just, uh, small village-- everyone knows everyone. (Y/N) lived down the street.”
Requested by @hahaboop: hi! I just discovered your blog and I love your content :) could I request a Merlin’s reader imagine? The reader and Merlin were from the same hometown and they didn’t really know each other but then the reader moves to Camelot after he moved and then they see each other and it’s really cute and fluffy? Thank you :))))
Key: (Y/N) - your name
Warnings: meddling royals, probably a little OOCness, mentions of servitude, i’m trying to use idioms which is inevitably going to be a disaster
Word Count: 643
Note: i haven’t watched merlin in so long,,,i hope the characters aren’t wack. Short but sweet, as a lot of these requests lately are. Honestly I think I need to get it in my head that less than 1k words is valid ladkjskjfd
There were a lot of things about Camelot that you assumed would surprise you. After all, living in a small village growing up left a lot to be desired and much more to be discovered. However, nothing was as surprising as who you ran into on your second day in the castle.
“Oh! I’m so sorry--” you exclaimed as you ran headfirst into someone.
The basket in your hands slipped and fell to the ground, leaving you to kneel down and collect the various linens that had fallen out of it. The person you ran into, much to your surprise, immediately moved to help you. In fact, they seemed just as apologetic as you were.
“Oh no, that’s my fault,” he said. “I wasn’t watching where I was-- (Y/N)?”
You jumped at the sound of your own name and looked up to see who it was.
“Merlin!?” you gasped, recognising him instantly.
*He hadn’t changed much from the day he left, you realised, though it wasn’t as if you were paying attention...His hair was a bit shaggier, maybe, but he still wore the same clothes and the same big, goofy smile. Said smile appeared a moment after you recognised him.
Merlin tucked the laundry back into the basket before speaking again. “What are you doing here, (Y/N)? And carrying laundry?”
You snorted and gathered it all up, standing when he did. “Not much to do back home; I wanted a change of pace, so I came here. I work for Lady Morgana now.”
“You what?” he echoed. “Since when?”
Raising an eyebrow at him, you couldn’t help a smile. “Since yesterday.”
From beside Merlin, someone cleared their throat. You nearly leapt out of your skin at the sight of Prince Arthur, but sank quickly into a bow.
“Deepest apologies, your highness,” you said smoothly. “(Y/N), at your service.”
When you stood once more, you saw he was looking between you and Merlin, amused.
“Do you two know each other?” he asked, aiming the question more at his servant than you.
“Oh, not really,” Merlin stammered. “Just, uh, small village-- everyone knows everyone. (Y/N) lived down the street.”
You smiled. “And Merlin caused enough trouble to make the rounds.”
Said man made an offended noise, but you got a laugh out of Arthur. For a split second, your ego boomed; you’d just made a prince laugh! And Prince Arthur, no less. You didn’t care to notice how red Merlin’s face was.
Arthur did, however, and looked between the two of you again. A devilish smile came over his expression.
“I would love to hear those stories,” he teased. Then, he nudged Merlin. “You should show (Y/N) around, take the day.”
You brightened, but Merlin gave him a suspicious look.
“The whole day?” he asked, squinting.
“It shouldn’t be a problem,” Arthur excused with a shrug. “Morgana and I have to talk about...things today.”
Merlin only grew more suspicious, which had the prince holding back snickers. ‘Things.’ Yes, things about the fact that his servant was head over heels for hers. Meanwhile, you were planning a quick getaway, not one to look a gift-horse in the mouth.
“I’d appreciate it, your highness,” you said immediately. “I don’t know left from right around here.”
“That settles it, then. Have fun,” Arthur declared, hitting Merlin’s shoulder.
He left abruptly, Merlin watching him with the most confused expression on his face. You laughed a little and approached him, laundry basket under one arm and the other slipping under his.
“Come on, then,” you said in a mock-hushed tone, as if it was a secret. “I just got you the whole day off.”
“Right…Was that weird or is that just me?”
You rolled your eyes. “Don’t worry about it, I’ll tell you when you’re older.”
