The way he looked at her was a look too familiar for Mercy, looking at her as if she was no more than another stranger that would blend back into the crowd but she was much more to him than that, or at least she had hoped so. It hurt her heart, that the only other person she believed to have had a significant impact on her life wasn't aware of what he meant to her; he had no memory of her at all. Looking back at him wasn't the same either. Looking into his deep blue eyes...this wasn't the same Kaleb Haynes that Mercedes knew, this was someone else. She didn't want to be looking at this man and not see Kaleb. She didn't want to be looked at as a stranger by someone she knew so well. She didn't want this. At this point, Mercedes would have just turned around and let herself merge into the background and he wouldn't have to see her again. He still had others who were more prominent in his life; he didn't need her, he wouldn't miss her, the greater powers of the world already proved that as a fact by making sure Mercedes' mother wouldn't remember her either. She could just turn around and leave and let memories stay as memories. 

No. Not again. And surely not to Kaleb. 

"November 18th, 2012. That's when we first met. I showed you a picture I was drawing on my tablet, of Versailles in France. You said that you preferred to draw with pen and paper, calling yourself 'old-fashioned,'" she said. "December 6th, we went to see André Watts and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concert no. 2. I think it's fair to say we both enjoyed each other's company. It was a really good evening. We found that we had quite a lot in common, and that there a lot of things we both liked."

He looked up at her. "Sounds like we were pretty good friends. Right?"
