[ challenge #4 ] What Love Gave Us
If Sam Winchester told you about his love life in detail you'd never believe him. Some Hunters sleep with possessed meat suits when they absolutely know that there's a demon behind their lover's human eyes, it really wasn't that uncommon. Some sleep with vampires and Sam had even met a woman who had a long term relationship with a werewolf once. It's just... usually there are breaks in between supernatural creatures.
But Sam was a magnet for them. Even the most harmless looking, normal seeming girls turned out to be some kind of horrible monstrosity just waiting to push him a little further toward a destiny of destruction and blood shed. It was hard to take for Sam, but pretty impossible for anyone else to believe. A friend of the Winchesters once joked that Sam had to be seeking out monsters and psychopaths. No one had luck that bad, there was just no way.
There were a few normal girls like Jessica and Amelia, but on the whole It had been one supernatural accident after another. It all started with a cute, sweet girl named Amy. Well, girl is probably not the right word to describe her. Amy was a Kitsune and Sam... well, he knew what she was and let her go, anyway. Twice.
He had no idea what Meg was when he met her. And Madison... so she wasn't necessarily all that evil, but it didn't have a happy ending.
The worst of them, a gorgeous blond named Harmony, turned out to be kind of the worst vampire in the world. You couldn't really call Becky a demon, but trust that she was close enough to make the list.
But none of them could really hold a candle to Ruby. She was tough and she was beautiful. When no one else, not even Dean, was on Sam's side he could count on Ruby to have his back. He hated to admit it now, but there was a side of himself that he could only share with her. She got him. She laughed with him when he was laughing and took his abuse with attitude when he was angry. Even when she was showing submission, which was really rare, she always seemed to have the upper hand in the game they were playing.
When Sam was at his lowest and sure his brother was dead and gone it was really Ruby who got through to him pulled him out of it. And though it's pretty ironic, she was the one who picked him up and gave him the strength and self confidence to eventually kill her when he had to. He couldn't escape his bond with her for a long time. Not after she was gone, not after he and Dean had moved on. She was bound to him even in the other reality. Well, bound to Peckalecki... Er, Padalecki...
She wasn't the last of his bad decisions, and she wasn't the worst decision, either. But she was his first. The first demon that Sam wanted to spend time with, even when he hated her. The first demon he had to hold in his arms. The black puff of smoke inside was what Sam wanted, the meat suits were beautiful but they weren't Ruby. She was so many firsts for him but, mostly, Ruby was the first and only demon Sam had ever loved and the first he'd ever really missed.
