“re-telling” on Jeju …
In 2018, the Global Youth Cultural Forum invited us to explore the self-built town of Namsung. This year we came back – Rosita, Nina and me – to carry out our proposal, titled “re-telling”. The proposal last year put forth an idea to create a listening device with a bench along the Soyongchun, so that we can hear as well as talk to the river. … Now “re-telling” is a listening device that operates in two different ways. A physical way through a resonance sculpture, in the sense of aural architecture, and digitally as an archive that collects the stories of the river to make it present. In october we got the chance to held various interviews with current residents of the village of Namsung, people who used to live next to the stream, and also conducted cultural research such as interviewing the head Shaman in Jeju island. The digital archive contains the research of interviews, photos, videos, maps, and sketches. The tumblr – www.soyongchun-stories.tumblr.com – is an invitation and platform where people can submit personal stories about their relation to the little dragon stream.
Special thanks to Alfonso Borragán, Kim Kidai, who have done a great job in mentoring us along the way. Also thank you to Jae Gyong for the excellent translations throughout this week. Thanks to GYCF and UCLG, as well as the Jeju Government for inviting us back!
