rgya gling gi bud tshad - the bell of a gyaling [RY]
I recently acquired Gyaling from Nepal. Sound=Invocation of mountain deity. The Gyaling is a Tibetan instrument, similar to an oboe or shawm. Unique features of the gyaling are: a) circular breathing is used to create lengthy drones; b) a quadruple reed (4 reeds wrapped together..!); c) they are played in pairs. I've observed an intriguing and meditative binaural effect from a pair in unison; d) one gyaling is slightly detuned, lending an incredible dissonance to the sound. This facilitates the binaural effect I mentioned above; The reeds, so far as I know, must be handmade by the practitioner. Will share information on this topic as I learn myself.
