I don’t often find myself siding with a “Gnu Atheist” against one of their most brilliant critics – especially when the Gnu Atheist in question is none other than Professor Jerry Coyne, and the critic is Eastern Orthodox theologian David Bentley Hart, the author of Atheist Delusions: The Christian Revolution and Its Fashionable Enemies who recently penned a biting online critique of the New Atheists entitled, Believe It or Not (First Things, May 2010). Readers will recall that on several occasions, I have written posts critical of Professor Coyne’s views, but this time I have to say that Coyne is right and Hart is wrong. It’s as simple as that. Hart’s errors, some of which relate to St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 A.D.), exhibit the same kind of shoddy scholarship found in the writings of theistic evolutionists who cite Augustine in support of their views.

I advise my followers to read this. I've already grown impatient with the Hart attacks. More so than my followers, I want Hartbreakers like existenceandidentity, gwyon, and semper-spes-est to read this. David Bentley Hart's critique of the so called new atheists is that they attack a literal interpretation of the Bible. He says that "all the church fathers said, 'of course, we read this allegorically'." This was his response when an interviewer asked him about Dawkins' claim that the god of the OT is a moral monster (see here--at about 2:40).  The article I linked is written by--no surprise here--a Bible literalist who disagrees with Hart's reading of Augustine. The author of the article quotes Augustine extensively and I've confirmed some of the quotes myself. Augustine sided with modern literalists on a number of things. At best, Hart's reading of Augustine is selective; he chooses to interpret him in a way that supports his conclusions. You Hartbreakers have your work cut out for you.

Also, a critical question to leave you Hartbreakers with: how in the world can we interpret any of the following verses allegorically?
