june claremont-diaz: the sanctified idea of southernness at it’s best
My daily adventures into Wicipedia (the Welsh-language Wikipedia) has presented me with the greatest infographic I’ve ever encountered in my life: how different dialects in Wales refer to a female dog in heat.
The west Walian bitch is hot, except for the Swansea and Pembrokeshire bitch which is just warm, not hot.
The Cardiffian bitch is dogging.
The Gog bitch is also dogging except for when she’s in Flintshire or Wrexham, in which case she is actively hunting other dogs, or in Welshpool, where she prefers to just chase them.
The mid Wales bitch has no fucking idea what’s going on.
textpostscymraeg says EWCH I FFYCIN BLEIDLEISIO
Bore da, gyfeillion! If you're eligible to vote in the Senedd elections: EWCH I FFYCIN BLEIDLEISIO! VOTE! POKEMON GO TO THE POLLS RIGHT NOW! And, in case you've been misinformed: you do not need to bring your ID or polling card to vote in this election.
GO, GO, GO! Except if you're a Reformer, in which case... why on earth are you following me? Kindly fuck off. Actually, no. Extremely aggressively fuck off. As far away as possible from this blog, your nearest polling station, Wales as a whole and ideally the planet.
Dydd Miwsig Cymru hapus, bawb! 🏴
Today’s Welsh Language Music Day, which I reckon is a bloody lovely chance for me to get you guys experiencing the Welsh language outside of the medium of Tumblr text posts - as a treat!
I’m [ironically] balls deep in the English railway network at the moment so haven’t had a chance to put together a list of my own personal favourites, but here’s a solid few playlists to get you started:
C’est Bon (Spotify playlist of new releases from Wales in both English and Welsh)
Green Man Festival: Dydd Miwsig Cymru (Spotify playlist, exclusively Welsh)
Same as above but on YouTube Music
Bangars Cymraeg (Spotify playlist of - you’ve guessed it - Welsh-language bangers)
Best Welsh-language album of all time
Best Welsh-language song of all time
Cover of the best Welsh-language song of all time

Not a text post, but I just saw this post by Clwb Rygbi Crymych and I think it’s an incredible example of just how varied dialects across Wales can be (as well as being a fantastic bit of marketing by Cymdeithas yr Iaith for the upcoming Eisteddfod in Pembrokeshire).
This is the Dyfedeg dialect, which basically encompasses a bunch of sub-dialects in South West Wales - this one in particular is specific to Penfro, or Pembroke.
Here’s a breakdown of the words:
Dyfedeg Welsh:
Wes whant peint? Wes glei!
Literal meaning in Welsh:
Oes chwant am beint? Oes, goeliaf!
Literal English translation:
Is there a craving for a pint? There is, I believe!
Colloquial translation:
Fancy a pint? Yeah, I’d say!
I just really love this; it’s so uniquely South West Welsh! And it’s also just a great example of why it’s so important to engage with different Welsh dialects and real-life speakers when you’re learning Welsh - it just gives the language so much more life and context and pizzazz. I could leave my Gog father and a Cardi man in a room together and they’d barely understand a word they’re saying to each other, and I think that’s beautiful.

textpostscymraeg is still in age verification jail
A big diolch to everyone who's messaged me about the whole UK age verification debacle - your advice is very much appreciated and has been taken on board!
This blog has been an unexpected source of joy for me over the past fifteen months or so, and I'm determined to find a way to escape age verification jail so this blog can keep running without restriction. You'd think being a 200-year-old undead horse would be enough, but hey ho, dyma ni.
Normal blog activities will resume soon. And that's a threat.
