They were beaten or chased till they run away from everyone they love, everyone they know, everything they own empty-handed. Today, they find refuge in what’s called “witch camps.” One woman was happily married, owned a lot of cattle and property with her husband. Just after his funeral, his younger brother was supposed to marry her so the inheritance stays in the family. She refused. Next thing she saw, she’d been labeled a witch and was beaten and chased out of her home. Another woman was accused by her rival’s son, who is an alcoholic. He claimed anytime he dreams, he sees his step mom forcing alcohol down his throat. She was beaten and driven out of her community. The first portrait is of 3 sisters. One got accused by her husband of witchcraft, shortly after their old dad died. She was beaten and driven out of her home and her husband married a younger woman shortly after. As if that was a cue to the others. The two other sisters suffered the act same fate. Today all three of them find refuge at the Gushegu Witch Camp. If you think these stories are outrageous, you haven’t heard the most ridiculous part yet. This is how to catch a witch: You take the accused to a shrine. You bring a chicken along. The priest will slaughter the chicken. It it dies with the legs facing up, the accused is innocent.
