How do you feel about Guru Larry?
Haha, well, this turned in to a weird thing on Twitter about four months ago. I’m hesitant to answer, given Larry seems like he might name search himself, but I’ve also always been completely honest about my feelings on this kind of stuff (to the point where occasionally I wonder if I should just keep my mouth shut so I don’t hurt my shot at upward momentum, but it’s too late to stop now)
Guru Larry the person seems like a guy who is friendly and amicable. He has lots of friends, among them are Youtubers I enjoy a great deal, like Ashens.
But the dude was apparently pro-Gamеr-Gatе early on, and he took Doug Walker’s side when Channel Awesome imploded (tl;dr Doug, aka The Nostalgia Critic, had a history of harassment and it chased away his entire talent network -- all except for Larry, basically, who eventually tried to spin being a scab as “I’m doing it for lols”).
I didn’t learn some of that until recently, however, because I’ve kept my distance from his content for other reason: dude’s kind of a liar?
Larry’s market is clickbait gamer outrage. I remember watching his video on “times Shigeru Miyamoto was an asshole” and it was full of shoddy research at best and genuinely deceitful information at worst. And it clearly wasn’t a one-off accident, given every other time I’ve broken down and watched one of his videos, it’s the same stuff. He has absolutely no empathy for the “real story,” because everyone else is always an idiot, or trying to get away with a scam, or whatever.
And it’s always framed from the perspective that he’s the one telling you what’s really going on, about the Very Important Thing You Missed, when all he’s really doing is contributing to the toxic culture of misinformation surrounding game development. There are a lot of things we will genuinely never know the truth about because guys like Guru Larry misinterpret that information so they can profit from sensational headlines that are barely even half-true.
And you, being the viewer, get to have The Good Brain Feelings, because his snake oil is designed to make it feel like you’ve got a leg up on every other sucker on this planet. Spoilers: You don’t.
There was a thread going around last year where Game Developers revealed their bizarre reasons for making games the way they did. It was meant to be a fun, tongue-in-cheek look in to strange solutions to even stranger problems. But that didn’t stop a bunch of gamers from whining about how game developers were “tricking them” or “censoring their games” without any real understanding what they were talking about.
Guru Larry’s videos contribute to that type of misunderstanding. He is making his audience dumber with every video that buys in to whatever he’s spinning as the truth that week. He doesn’t just feed outrage over the topics he covers, he creates a cult of outrage that expects this from all of game development. Some people want to be angry, and Guru Larry’s way of presenting information provides validation for that anger.
Do not trust Guru Larry, and do not trust people that trust Guru Larry. He’s a carnival barker out to make a fast buck and is contributing to a consistently worse quality of discourse.
He’s also probably reading this. Hi, Larry! Thanks for the sub! You still owe me a book!
