Gumbaz
The Gumbaz (Mausoleum) of Haider Ali and Tippu Sultan, Srirangapatna, Karnataka, India.
Tippu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore, and his father Haider Ali are buried here. Tippu Sultan is perhaps the most glorified hero of all the Indian kings who stood up to the mighty British East India Company and died a hero’s death protecting the last of his kingdom at the fort at Srirangapatna in 1799. The final war of the south, called the ‘Fourth Anglo-Mysore War,’ must have been the real turning point for the British. Tippu had the support of the French; who, with their soldiers along with their latest French artillery, not only gave him support but also stood by his side in the battlefield. It is said that Napoleon himself gave moral support to the Sultan from Egypt. On the other side, the British ironically had the support of the neighboring Muslim King (Nizam) of Hyderabad and his huge army. So the stage was set for the fight of the Muslim Kings with the support of the European powers to control what would be the entire Hindu India at that time. As they say, the rest was the real History of India. I often wondered, if the results were the other way around, would I be speaking French or perhaps Urdu today?
