GULLVEIG
Gullveig was a powerful sorceress and völva, feared by the Aesir for her mastery of seidr magic. She traveled to Asgard, but her presence unsettled the gods, who deemed her dangerous. Some scholars suggest she came from Vanaheim, as the Vanir were skilled in seidr, and some even associate her with Freyja, though there is no certainty in their connection.
The Aesir attempted to destroy her, piercing her with spears and burning her, but she always returned. Ultimately, Loki consumed her heart, which seemingly ended her, but from that act, he became pregnant and gave birth to monstrous offspring : earlier myths might have linked this to Hel, Jörmungandr, and Fenrir before Angrboda’s introduction in the 12th century. After her last death, Gullveig’s power persisted and she was reborn or transformed into Heiðr, continuing her legacy as a wandering seeress and wielder of magic.
