Headcanon that the biggest difference between Garak and Mirror!Garak is that in the mirror universe, Tain legitimately loved his son and spoiled him rotten.
Like his dad is still Tain, so little Garak is encouraged to bully the smaller kids and lie and all that and becomes a terrible person as a result. But he also can do no wrong in Tain’s eyes and gets everything he asks for. He never learns subtlety or loyalty to the state. Only to throw fits and be whiny and to try to punish people when they don’t give him what he wants.
Later in life, he joins the military and primarily gets his positions through nepotism right up until Tain dies while Garak is stationed at Terok Nor (for what was supposed to be a short time) and after that, he’s stuck there. Daddy can’t pull strings anymore and Garak’s not actually that smart or skilled or ballsy, so he’s left biding his time torturing Terrans for fun and plotting the Intendant’s death.
