Apple Inc. has held onto its grip on the smartphone industry ever since it realeased the first iPhone. Apple has quickly gained a large part of market share on its behalf. To counter this, many phone companies have begun to seek a way to get a part of that pie. Google was the one to do this successfully.
Minus the fact that they, Google, failed to realize that the term "Droid" was trademarked by George Lucas, have made a successful line of Android powered devices. Where as Apple has a tightly knit, closed operating system, Google's operating system is completely open to the public. But is this a good thing? Should anyone be allowed to develop for a system that thousands of people use? I see problems with an open system. The biggest problem being malware.
Did you say malware? Yes, yes I did. Because anyone can develop for the Droid system, that opend the door for hackers and 'bad' people to develop apps that access and copy and store all of your passwords, GPS location, contacts, and more. This was a big problem when 25 apps on Google's store were found to be doing that. They have since been removed. iPhone doesnt have that problem. Why? Because their system is closed.
Now, I personally own an iPhone. Yes, there are somethings I would change. However, I am not in charge. Apple's platform is somewhat bland. It offers very little customation on the user's end, but that is, umm, tolerable. Apple does not allow just anyone to develop for the iPhone. One, you have to have an Apple computer, and two, you have to pay a $99 developer fee. Then you have to submit your finished product for review. Now, we've all seen the fact that app developer's apps have been rejected for no reason. *cough, Google Voice* But I like the fact that all apps have to be reviewed. Why? There is certain content that I just dont want to see while using an app. Keeping things "safe" for everyone is a smart. For you PC users, viruses, spyware, hackers, and malware can is a nig headache. Apple wants to keep that off of their platform. I understand that and appreciate it. I dont want that hassle on my smartphone! You dont either, but im not pushing you toward the iPhone.
The Android has great uses, but they dont suit me, for the user. video wallpaper, great use of push notifications, a robust system. But there are constant problems within the Android Market. Malware is constantly making its way onto the system! What can you do with it while leaving the platform open? Nothing, unless you hold all the cards in your hand, you cannot do anything to end it. You just pull the apps down after they have done their damage.
So, you must choose what platform you would like. Open or Closed? I'm not going to sell you a certain phone, but I will provide you with the information you need to know before choosing your next big phone.
Tell me what you think in the comments below! Is the Android better than the iPhone? Do you need to have an open system or shoul the company have full control of the content they put on their app store for the public? Let me know.
