Central American Student
Hello Everyone! Welcome to my very own, and very first tumblr. I shall start by introducing myself. My name is pronounced sah-rah-eee (Sarahi), or Sarah for short. I identify myself as an American and Guatemalan, but I always say Guatemalan first. Both my parents were born in Santa Rosa, Chiquimullia in Guatemala. As a very young girl before entering pre-kinder I was taught to speak the Spanish language. Spanish is the preferred language I choose to use at home, with my family, and peers who speak the same language. Beginning school for the first time was when I began to start learning to speak the English language. Therefore, like many others I am bilingual. Growing up i had no problem differentiating both languages and being able to use both in adequate times. When i turned 7, my parents decided to take our first trip as a family to Guatemala together so that my sister and I would have the chance to meet a large important portion of our family. Since then we got use to traveling to Guatemala every year for the winter. Being able to travel to Guatemala has connected me to the part of me that makes me a latina. I feel as if I didn’t visit Guatemala enough or at all I wouldn’t have that beautiful perspective I have on my country. Another aspect that is important is the fact that my upbringing is affected by the fact that I was raised Guatemalan but also follow american ways. I celebrate the American holidays, but I speak spanish and eat food that are traditionally made in Guatemala such as tamales, caldo de pollo (chicken soup), caldo de res (beef soup), and pollo en crema (chicken sauteed in cream). Although my family and I believe Guatemala is such a beautiful country, they do encourage me to seek better opportunities here int he U.S. compared to the ones in Guatemala. One of the underlying factors of Guatemala is the fact that there are many areas in which it can improve such as its economy, society, and protection. Overall I love where my parents come from and how they have passed that on to me and I will cherish that forever. Being Guatemalan makes me who I am. Que viva Guatemala para siempre!
