Uryuu looks at Ryuken in disbelief.  The wiry white ermine, Elpis, perched on his shoulder is completely still for once—the outwardly high strung barometer to Uryuu’s regular placidity frozen in her surprise.

He’s known for a while that his father has been seeing the “retired” guard.  The exact nuances of their relationship he tends to not muse on, and its not as if his father is ever forthcoming about information, let alone about his personal life.  But this…speaks of an entwining of their lives that almost reeks of betrayal and hypocrisy of anything that Ryuken has ever told him.

“She’s doing what!?”

Elpis unfreezes herself and begins to skitter back and forth from one shoulder to the other, rubbing her soft, pale fur against the back of his neck, nervous energy in her jerkiness, working her hardest to soothe Uryuu while she discharges her own discomfort and fear that she feels at the intensity of Uryuu’s reaction.

“You haven’t brought her over for a proper meeting, to me, your son, and yet today…she is moving in with us?  Are you mad?”

“...do you know? I don’t want to die. 

“Not now. And not even before, when I thought I had no choice. I never wanted that. It always made me very sad. It still does, thinking of it.

“...but then, sometimes, I don’t know whether it would have been better. I’m... in love, you see. Hopelessly in love. And the woman I love... she deserves the universe...

“...no! What am I saying? Ha-ha! She is the universe.

“She deserves better than me. That’s what I mean.

“But I hope she’ll stay. I want her to stay. I don’t want her to leave me. I need her now. Now that I’ve loved her, I need her.

“They’re just another animal...and hardly a vicious one at that. Then again, I suppose I’d be more worried about running into a goose than a duck.”

She lost him.

It wasn't her fault, not really, for now was she supposed to know she was meant to stay put? That he would only be a few moments? Surely, if anything, he was at fault, leaving her alone like that. Yes, that would be her excuse. She was not at fault for being distracted by a particularly coloured butterfly, not at all. Definitely not.

Still, it resulted in her current predicament, being alone on a seemingly barren path. There were various events occurring throughout the Seireitei, thus the streets were quiet, almost devoid of life. Almost.

Nemuri blinked, her small eyes spotting a figure in the distance. It was forbidden, to talk to strangers, but honestly, what harm could it do? The minute girl knew how to handle herself after all, and besides, it's not like her father would let them get away with anything.

Puffing her chest out with an overwhelming surge of confidence taking over her form, she skipped towards the figure at a speed that would make most have their eyes water trying to comprehend it. The closer she got, however, the more the confidence dwindled. What was she doing? She could not do this. But it was too late, for she was upon them now, noting their muscles tensing upon sensing her miniscule spiritual pressure.

Nemuri tensed herself, regret and panic threatening to bubble over, a nauseating sensation pooling in her stomach. Emerald eyes cast a glance towards her figure, wide in wonder as she took in their appearance. Strange, yet so familiar-- it was enough to spring the words into the air surrounding them both.

The noises of the jungle buzzed around Cyan’s ears, little pests crawling all around the jungle along it’s floor, under the canopy of trees, buzzing through the air they were all so...noisy. The sounds grated on Cyan’s nerves, perhaps that was why there were rumors about noisy men traveling through the woods being snatched up and eaten by some horrible monster, bones left strewn across miles of forest in all kinds of different and surprising little places. Yet that never seemed to deter them, to keep them at a distance and to mind themselves and stay out of her home, her personal territory deep in the center of the woods. Yes the flies buzzing was annoying, but, it was the snapping of heavy boots, breaking of branches, the scattering of the wildlife that told her her least favorite kind of pest was about this fine evening. Men.

A gorgon is what many of them called her, a monster, a beast, the truth was it was painfully clear they didn’t know what she was and tried any explanation for the creature they continued to vex deep in the woods.She slid silently along the forest floor, slipping around the trees avoiding pushing brush or snapping twigs she moved undetected towards the clattering noise of the men moving in a hurry through the forest. And soon enough, they began to vanish, first one, another and another, a wrong turn in the darkness, a silver scaled tail dragging them back into the dark, Cyan had a bad habit of playing with her food....so it wasn’t long before their leader the large one saved for last found his way to whatever destination he was so foolhardy to chase after in the dead of night after they KNEW the snake was now present and aware of them. What he led her too, surprised her, it was another human but unlike the pack of men she’d just hunted and run down, she had not NOTICED this one enter the woods alone. Nor had Cyan heard HER creeping along through or stop to do something even as extreme as set up a camp deep in the snake’s territory...how odd.

It seemed the remaining man thought he had lost Cyan, as he approached the sleeping woman’s camp, she wore strangely ornate silks and robes unfamiliar to the juniper haired female. She had never seen anyone or anything quite like her....it was then the noise of the man rifling around in his pack to pull out a rope looming towards the sleeping stranger of a woman brought Cyan back to what she was doing, pest control. Doubtless it was the cracking of bones or the dying screams that would wake the other woman to find a large bloodstained monstrosity in the center of her camp. Half snake, half woman, her silver scales stained with blood, viscera and other matter from her hunt. The man’s head in one of her hands severed from his body which was crumpled in her coils as she presently was shoving one of his arms clean down her throat she swallowed as she noticed her still living company, was now well awake. Her mouth empty she turned raising what was not currently wound around the dead man to elevate her height as she looked at the strange woman who’d managed to creep into her territory, did she have a death wish? It was odd.

Yet Cyan said nothing she merely stared, perhaps this woman had connected the simple thread in all the mysteries and rumors about the jungle’s monster.

Hmmm, one of the songs on the playlist I have for him is Chet Baker’s version of I get along without you very well -  the reasons for this, considering it’s a song about lost love, are probably obvious. 

For every 🎼 I will give a song that I as a mun associate with my muse

In all honesty I have a good few at this point and it’s kind of hard to pick. However, Greenday’s The Grouch, was the first one which really made me think, yup that sounds like him. It’s really not a flattering song (maybe it’s Uryuu’s perspective of him or something - the lyrics could certainly imply that).  Lyrics are here for the curious.

For me as a mun, the first song that always come to mind when I think of Shutara is Queen’s March of the Black Queen from Queen II.Mainly because of the lyrics in the first verse  

 You’ve never seen nothing like itNo, never in your lifeLike going up to heavenAnd then coming back alive

and again towards the end:

Although, that said - Shuu also springs to mind whenever I hear Papa Ge’s songs in Once on this Island - particularly Forever your’s (Reprise) . I’m not sure if it’s the power of Merle Dandridge’s voice or the whole idea of there needing to be a balance between life and death no matter the cost (as earlier on the musical - the main character traded her life for the life of the male lead and Papa Ge is essentially collecting on the debt)  which does it, but it’s something which makes me think Shutara. Funnily enough, Mama will provide from the same musical reminds me of Kirio Hikafune.
