Link Listener

The link listener is the first tag you will need to create to track link clicks. Follow these steps, starting from your container overview page:

Click “New”

Select “Tag”

In the Tag Name field, name the tag: Link Click Listener

In the Tag Type drop down, hover over “Event Listener”

Select “Link Click Listener”

Tick the “Wait for Tags” checkbox

Set the Max Wait Time (2000 milliseconds should be fine)

Tick the “Check Validation” box

At the top right of the browser window you’ll see a section called “Firing Rules”, click the “+Add” button

A modal window will pop-up, in the Rule Name field, name the rule “All Pages”

Under Conditions, set the first drop down to: {{url}}

Set the section drop down to “matches RegEx”

In the field, type: .*

Click “Save”

Form Submit Listener

The form submit listener will track anytime a form is successfully submitted. Follow these steps, starting from your container overview page:

Click “New”

Select “Tag”

In the Tag Name field, name the tag: Form Submit Listener

In the Tag Type drop down, hover over “Event Listener”

Select “Form Submit Listener”

Tick the “Wait for Tags” checkbox

Set the Max wait time (2000 milliseconds should be fine)

Select the check the “Check Validation” box as this will require the form to be successfully submitted

At the top right of the browser window you’ll see a section called “Firing Rules”, click the “+Add” button

A modal window will pop-up, in the Rule Name field, name the rule “All Pages”

Under Conditions, set the first drop down to “{{url}}”

Set the section drop down to “matches RegEx”

In the field, type: .*

Click “Save”

Outbound Link Clicks

Outbound link clicks are when a user clicks on a link that leaves the your website. Follow these steps, starting from your container overview page:

Click “New”

Select “Tag”

In the Tag Name field, name the tag: Outbound Link Click

In the Tag Type drop down, hover over “Google Analytics” and select “Universal Analytics”

In the Tracking ID field, put: {{UA Tracking Code}}

In the Track Type drop down, select “Event”

In the Event Tracking Parameters set:

At the top right of the browser window you’ll see a section called “Firing Rules”, click the “+Add” button

A modal window will pop-up, select “Create New Rule” and in the Rule Name field, name the rule “Outbound Links”

In the Conditions section, set the first drop down to “{{event}}”

Set the second drop down to “equals”

In the field put: gtm.linkClick

Click the “+” button to the right of the field

Set the first drop down to “{{element url}}”

Set the second drop down to “does not match RegEx”

In the field put: ^https:\/\/www\.YOURDOMAINHERE\.com.*

Click the “+” button to the right of the field

Set the first drop down to “{{element url}}”

Set the second drop down to “does not match RegEx”

In the field put: .*javascript:void.*

Click “Save” to exit the modal window

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save”

Category to: Outbound Links

Action to: Click

Label to: {{element url}}

Value can be left blank

Non-Interaction hit can be false

Form Submissions

This will fire an event anytime a user clicks a submit button your website. Follow these steps, starting from your container overview page:

Click “New”

Select “Tag”

In the Tag Name field, name the tag: Form Submits

In the Tag Type drop down, hover over “Google Analytics” and select “Universal Analytics”

In the Tracking ID field, put: {{UA Tracking Code}}

In the Track Type drop down, select “Event”

In the Event Tracking Parameters set:

At the top right of the browser window you’ll see a section called “Firing Rules”, click the “+Add” button

A modal window will pop-up, select “Create New Rule” in the Rule Name field, name the rule “Submit Clicks”

In the Conditions section, set the first drop down to “{{event}}”

Set the second drop down to “equals”

In the field put: gtm.formSubmit

Click “Save” to exit the modal window

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save”

Category to: Form Submits

Action to: Submit

Label to: {{url}}

Value can be left blank

Non-Interaction hit can be false

Phone Clicks to Call

This will track anytime a user clicks on a phone number from a mobile device. Follow these steps, starting from your container overview page:

Click “New”

Select “Tag”

In the Tag Name field, name the tag: Mobile Clicks to Call

In the Tag Type drop down, hover over “Google Analytics” and select “Universal Analytics”

In the Tracking ID field, put: {{UA Tracking Code}}

In the Track Type drop down, select “Event”

In the Event Tracking Parameters set:

At the top right of the browser window you’ll see a section called “Firing Rules”, click the “+Add” button

A modal window will pop-up, select “Create New Rule” in the Rule Name field, name the rule “Tel Links”

In the Conditions section, set the first drop down to “{{event}}”

Set the second drop down to “equals”

In the field put: gtm.linkClick

Click the “+” button to the right of the field

Set the first drop down to “{{element url}}”

Set the second drop down to “starts with”

In the field put: tel:

Click “Save” to exit the modal window

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save”

Category to: Contact

Action to: Phone

Label to: {{element url}}

Value can be left blank

Non-Interaction hit can be false

Email Link Clicks

This will track anytime a user clicks on an email link on your website. Follow these steps, starting from your container overview page:

Click “New”

Select “Tag”

In the Tag Name field, name the tag: Email Clicks

In the Tag Type drop down, hover over “Google Analytics” and select “Universal Analytics”

In the Tracking ID field, put {{UA Tracking Code}}

In the Track Type drop down, select “Event”

In the Event Tracking Parameters set:

At the top right of the browser window you’ll see a section called “Firing Rules”, click the “+Add” button

A modal window will pop-up, select “Create New Rule” in the Rule Name field, name the rule “Email Links”

In the Conditions section, set the first drop down to “{{event}}”

Set the second drop down to “equals”

In the field put: gtm.linkClick

Click the “+” button to the right of the field

Set the first drop down to “{{element url}}”

Set the second drop down to “starts with”

In the field put: mailto:

Click “Save” to exit the modal window

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save”

Category to: Contact

Action to: Email

Label to: {{element url}}

Value can be left blank

Non-Interaction hit can be false

File Downloads

This will track anytime a user clicks on a file to download that matches one of the predefined file types. If you want to track additional file types, simply add them to the list in step 22. Follow these steps, starting from your container overview page:

Click “New”

Select “Macro”

In the Macro Name field, name it: FileType

Select Macro Type “Custom Javascript”

Paste this in the box:

Click Save

Click “New”

Select “Tag”

In the Tag Name field, name the tag: Downloads

In the Tag Type drop down, hover over “Google Analytics” and select “Universal Analytics”

In the Tracking ID field, put: {{UA Tracking Code}}

In the Track Type drop down, select “Event”

In the Event Tracking Parameters set:

At the top right of the browser window you’ll see a section called “Firing Rules”, click the “+Add” button

A modal window will pop-up, select “Create New Rule” in the Rule Name field, name the rule “Download File Clicks”

In the Conditions section, set the first drop down to “{{event}}”

Set the second drop down to “equals”

In the field put: gtm.linkClick

Click the “+” button to the right of the field

Set the first drop down to “{{element url}}”

Set the second drop down to “matches RegEx (ignore case)”

In the field put: ^.*\.(7z|aac|arc|arj|asf|asx|avi|bin|csv|doc|docx|exe|flv|gif|gz|gzip|hqx|jar|jpe?g|js|mp(2|3|4|e?g)|mov(ie)?|msi|msp|pdf|phps|png|ppt|qtm?|ra(m|r)?|sea|sit|tar|tgz|torrent|txt|wav|wma|wmv|wpd|xls|xml|z|zip)$

Click “Save” to exit the modal window

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save”

Internal Link Clicks

This might not be needed for most sites, but it can help you identify the top clicked links on individual pages and it’s just more data in case you need it. Follow these steps, starting from your container overview page:

Click “New”

Select “Tag”

In the Tag Name field, name the tag: Internal Links

In the Tag Type drop down, hover over “Google Analytics” and select “Universal Analytics”

In the Tracking ID field, put: {{UA Tracking Code}}

In the Track Type drop down, select “Event”

In the Event Tracking Parameters set:

At the top right of the browser window you’ll see a section called “Firing Rules”, click the “+Add” button

A modal window will pop-up, select “Create New Rule” in the Rule Name field, name the rule “Internal Link Clicks”

In the Conditions section, set the first drop down to “{{event}}”

Set the second drop down to “equals”

In the field put: gtm.linkClick

Click the “+” button to the right of the field

Set the first drop down to “{{element url}}”

Set the second drop down to “matches RegEx (ignore case)”

In the field put: ^https:\/\/www\.YOURDOMAINHERE\.com.*

Click the “+” button to the right of the field

Set the first drop down to “{{element url}}”

Set the second drop down to “does not match RegEx (ignore case)”

In the field put: .*javascript:void.*

Click “Save” to exit the modal window

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save”
