The importance of influence: "...the wrong influencer can ultimately end up doing more damage than good." For those new to Google+, the attached post shared by Digital Media Ghost is a must-read if you're looking for a decision-making process to help populate your circles. Getting that part of the Google+ experience right is imperative if you want our beloved platform work for you. Why follow those with large followings already? If you identify someone as an influencer, their large following is probably one of the reasons you've chosen to follow them. Declaring your allegiance to someone publicly comes a lot easier to us as human beings if we feel we're part of a crowd, that we belong.  Also, having lots of followers usually means that the individual produces reams of great content.  This doubly justifies your subconscious decision to follow them and you're sold before you even realise you've pressed the "Add To Circles" button.  Or you would be if G+ loaded a little bit faster. Using G+ influencers to grow your own following For those looking for marketing inspiration, people you circle are more than likely in a niche that you're hoping to break into yourself.  Otherwise, why subscribe to their content? With such a huge following, it's unlikely that your influencer will be able to service every single one of them on a personal basis.  If you can add value to the influencer's threads - easier to do on G+ than any other platform I know - you'll grab the attention of their followers, too. There's no reason why you can't pick up a segment of their following and turn them into your own brand evangelists, if you engage where the influencer is unable.  And eventually (shock, horror) they may even turn into customers! With a large following comes responsibility Equally as critical as the importance of influence, is the responsibility that inherently develops as your following grows.  That's groundbreaking for those not used to having people hang off their every update. Many people I've met on G+ have not had so much as a whisper of engagement elsewhere, but have been suddenly cast into the social media spotlight here. When you get to this stage, not only do you have to retain your level of engagement with your own influencers so that your expertise in the niche remains relevant, you have to then: ► interpret that content ► impart your own voice and ► share it with your own following so that they're rewarded for the faith they've placed in by adding you too their circles. That comes full circle to the title of this share. If you follow the wrong people - or the wrong people are chosen to represent a brand - it can kill your experience of the niche, the brand and the person you've unfortunately chosen to follow.  And, of course, Google+.
