Prejudice as a Sense of Group Position
In his article Prejudice as a Sense of Group Position, Herbert Blumer discusses race prejudice as a collective process and goes on to describe the four elemental feelings of the dominant group wherever a heirarchy is present.
1) A feeling of superiority.
2) A feeling that a subordinate race is intrinsically different and alien.
3) Feeling a proprietary claim to certain areas of privilege and advantage.
4) A fear and suspicion that the subordinate race harbors designs of the prerogatives of the dominant race.
I think that largely, our society today has a general sense of complacency. Before entering my undergrad and taking some of the courses that have talked about inequality in American society, I was very naive to the fact the these social stratification still existed. I believe this is an enduring idea that less educated Americans hold. I grew up hearing the racism and prejudice were non-existent. Everyone was allowed equal rights etc. But now there are things that I've learned that make it impossible to ignore the thinly veiled truth any longer. As Blumer discussed, there are this senses of identification with a group. That naturally leads to cohesiveness and an idea of an other. Those ideas cannot be avoided and are an innate part of being a social human being. What I'm not sure about though, and what I find disturbing is the thought the there will never be a world free of prejudice. Merely the idea of inclusion and identification with a group leads others to hold ideas about you. The saying guilt by association comes to mind. If one person acts out the third of fourth feelings in Blumer's list, the single act could be interpreted as a feeling of entire group unease. It further boggles my mind when Blumer talks about stratification in caste systems where there are seemingly no inherent intergroup differences. It doesn't exactly strike hope in my heart that the world is as great of a place that I believed it to be as a child.
