We didn't realize that the voice message function had been tidied up and streamlined until someone apparently called into our number this morning after hearing the radio segment. Here are the two very thoughtful voice messages she left us about budget cuts:

Here’s some good social stuff for your Friday:

1. Tamara Keith is tired of kicking the can down the road. Sometimes Congress finds it hard to make a decision. Sometimes they like to “kick the can down the road.” What to do when you’ve already used this cliche one too many times? Tamara Keith asked her community for help last year, during another moment of prolonged congressional deliberation, and the result was a cornucopia of alternative phrases. She collected them in a Storify. Now, I think it’s time to “hit the snooze button."

2. NPR is a winner. Regular readers of the sandbox know that we are fans of reddit. It turns out that they like us, too.

A week ago reddit announced it would donate 10 percent of its advertising revenue to 10 charities. The reddit community would choose the charities. After 250,000+ votes cast by 80,000+ voters, NPR is a winner! Other winners include the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Doctors Without Borders and the Tor Project Inc. Thanks reddit!

3. Listening Post New Orleans shows how to connect with a community. I was struck by this tweet the other day showing the Listening Post team putting up recruitment signs on the streets of New Orleans.

Listening Post uses a digital platform called Groundsource to engage with people through their mobile phones. But the first step in reaching people who would not otherwise be aware of the Listening Post project is to post signs asking people to join in! It’s building digital community through getting out in the community. The end result: stories on member station WWNO.

1. Spotify has created a way for people to listen to playlists that are exactly the length of time that it takes to roast different-sized turkeys. This is smart: it’s saying “We know you do something else while listening to audio and we’re helping you do that.” Think of the NPR playlists we could create while people clean, drive, wake up, etc. h/t Erin Martin and Melody Kramer

2. It’s time we start listening a little more. Andrew Haeg published a super-thoughtful piece on Medium the other day titled “Reimagining news from the ground up.” Basically, he wants us to start understanding our audience and the world they inhabit by listening to them. Haeg’s Groundsource project is designed do just that. More broadly, he sees us forming a partnership with the public to report real, local news through the creation of a space in which they share, we listen and action follows. via Wright Bryan
