Brief neighborhood background:  

So, where are we exactly interning?

Encanto is hot and dry town placed in the South Eastern part of San Diego, a half hour north of the Mexican-American boarder and a half hour east from the beautiful beaches of the San Diego.  

According to numbers provided by Onboard Informatics from 2014 close to 70.000 people inhabit Encanto, San Diego. Previously, Encanto was a very African-American dominant neighborhood, however, in late years have seen a fluctuation of Latin-Americans in the community accompanied with individuals and families of Asian descent. Becoming a multi-ethnical melting pot has both presented complication for the community as well as opportunities. Prior and still, the community has and is very crime prone and has received much negative press from both printed and digital media. The negative press has made the community less attractive for outsides to join the community both individuals, families and business.  

Conversely, according to the city of San Diego retail analysis from 2015, the Encanto neighborhood has what they call the 1 billion retail opportunity. Thus, if the community grows, one could imagine this one billion retail opportunity will follow.

Furthermore, Encanto’s demographic is very young, the median is 29,6 years old, compared to the 34,7 of San Diego county. As a result, Encanto is an up-and-coming neighborhood in more than one sense, thus, if the youth can be educated and restrike their passion for entrepreneurship, and ownership of their community, the municipal can only prosper.  

 Jacobs Center of Neighborhood Innovation

Many NGO’s and CBO’s are working towards furthering this and building the community and its capacity. One of the larger organizations is Jacobs Center of Neighborhood Innovation, whom has built a large plaza in the center of the town. Mats and I have interviewed the Director of Education and Creative Place Making, Sandra Ainslie, whom informed us that the idea behind the plaza was to let local businesses prosper. However, many (all) of the local business’ have failed to reach success and the Plaza is today filled with countrywide commercial business. This is however not all bad since it provides employment and changes the local environment.

 Project new village 

The Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation works with local NGO’s and one in the forefront of this is Project New Village. Project New Village is a local NGO run by longtime resident of Encanto, Diane Moss, who is already in the progress of creating great initiatives in collaboration with the organization. Across from the Marked Creek Plaza, an empty lot owned by the Jacobs Center stands vacant; the plan is in time Project New Village shall transform this empty plot in to a dynamic community garden, ideally working with newly freed inmates helping them get back into society and on the right track. This collaboration will be done with a third NGO.   

Collaborating with Diane Moss is of great importance for the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation; hence, as mention previously, Encanto is a cultural melting pot, thus having a local as a community gate keeper is of great importance to avoid any complication of certain individuals or groupings feeling overseen or wrongly treated.   Important to note, this is not the first time Project New Village is working with community gardens, already the organization has created a great garden in Mount Hope, engaging with community members whilst producing fresh produce both for plot owners and the community.  

 Groundworks San Diego 

However, Project New Village and the Jacobs center are far from the only CBO’s in the neighborhood performing outreach programs. Groundworks, a NGO located in Encanto has, as well as a school garden, many educational programs believing in furthering the community through its youth and education.  Groundworks has both a summer program for middle school student educating students outdoors in an open environment about the nature, sustainability, scientific language and more at a four acre educational playground, the EarthLab.  

Ground Works also has a summer program, The Green Team, educating and creating young leaders in the neighborhood.
