August Friedrich Vollmer left his home in #grotzingen #germany alone, at the age of 16, for #NewYork. He arrived in Manhattan's #BatteryPark, through #CastleClinton, on July 14, 1882. August opened a German bakery on the #LowerEastSide, where he lived for 15 years before buying a parcel of land in Michigan and moving west with his family. This is his barn, still marked A. Vollmer. It is now operated by a distant relative, making it one of Michigan's #centennialfarms. New York+Michigan+our family for over 100 years. However, I'm fairly certain that my little branch has permanently moved east. @aansari1 @santetoyourhealth look what we saw today.
