UCR’s back in session for Fall Quarter, and you know what that means? Fall Rush Week! The siblings of Gamma Rho Lambda cannot wait to meet you all and get some new members for our family.
In case you don’t know, Gamma Rho Lambda at UCR is an all-inclusive sorority for anyone female-identified/assigned at birth. GRL recognizes the challenges that Lesbian, Bisexual, Queer, Transgender and allied womyn face. We then build a family based off of who we are, identities aside, and strive for advocacy, visibility, awareness, and education.
Over the course of Week 3 (Oct. 14-18), we host events so that potential new members can meet us and find out if Gamma Rho Lambda is a good fit for them. You do not have to go to every event, but you have to go to at least one of our Info Sessions to be able to join us this quarter.
Brown Bag Info Session *

What? One of our favorite Gamma Rho Lambda traditions is the cupcake social. Come on down and join us while we decorate treats and get to know each other a little better.

A: Gamma Rho Lambda at UCR is an all-inclusive womyn’s sorority, fostering ideals of siblinghood, advocacy, visibility, awareness and education. These ideals are the focal point of our family and will be sustained through love, dedication, unity, understanding and compassion. Our family members will provide a safe place for people to express their multiple identities (sexuality, ethnicity, class, gender, religion, etc.) by providing a forum for self-expression and lifelong siblinghood.
Basically, Gamma Rho Lambda is a sorority that offers somewhere for people to relax and create a sense of family while here at UC Riverside. While some of our focus does go towards breaking barriers (ie. differences between identities and people's perceptions, expectations of who belong in sororities, and what Greek life means for people who haven't historically experienced it before), a lot of who we are comes from the fact that all of our different identities and ideals belong and are accepted here.
To paraphrase one of our members, we build bonds of familyhood based on identity and who you are, not what you do in the org. Regardless of how you identify (be it sexually, ethnically, spiritually, or your gender identity), you can join our family and help us create a life long family.
We strive to always create a comfortable, loving, family environment. Part of how we do that is through our inclusiveness, especially in our language and our understanding of people.
Q: But what is a sorority? Why should I join a sorority instead of being in a club or another student organization?
A:Â A sorority is a student organization on a college campus that's typically partially social in nature. While UCR does not have official houses for our sororities and fraternities, the different Greek organizations act as a family for those involved. Clubs can provide students with other people to interact with, or activities, but sororities build a network of students that actively agree and want to support each other. The bond, in some cases, is stronger with sororities than with other clubs or groups that take place on campus.
Beyond UCR, sororities are also there for students after they graduate if they become alumni. Sororities have different chapters and colonies in other cities and states, allowing people to potentially bond and network with people around the country as well.
Q:Â Why should I join Gamma Rho Lambda over another sorority?
A:Â For one, Gamma Rho Lambda is the nation's first LGBT+ sorority. As one of our siblings has said, GRL is a place where you don't have to worry about your political beliefs, or worry about feeling accepted.
Greek organizations can feel intimidating because of the expectations people have about what being in a sorority or fraternity is like, or who the people inside of sororities and fraternities are like. Gamma Rho Lambda has siblings of varying identities, be those physical, sexual, racial, spiritual, etc. Our siblings can tell you that you can look around and picture yourself as one of us. We, as a chapter, also use inclusive, gender neutral language so that no one feels excluded, or uncomfortable, with us.
That being said, the best way to know if Gamma Rho Lambda is the sorority for you is to go to some of our events, meet our members, and see how you feel about who we are and what we do firsthand.
Before we forget, UCR has a no hazing policy for all of its Greek organizations. Gamma Rho Lambda strongly agrees with and believes in no hazing so that everyone -- new members, potential members, and active members -- feel comfortable and safe at all times.
Q:Â Who can join Gamma Rho Lambda?
A:Â Anyone female identified or assigned female at birth can potentially join Gamma Rho Lambda. On this same note, we are a lesbian, bisexual, queer, transgender, and ally sorority, so we provide people a safe place to express their identities, whatever those may be.
Q:Â What do I have to do to join?
A:Â In Fall and Spring Quarters, we have rush events that you can go to if you are interested in joining Gamma Rho Lambda. Going to the events does not necessarily mean that you have to commit to joining the sorority. After the initial events, there are other things that happen, including a new member process, by which you get to experience what it is like to be a member of Gamma Rho Lambda.
Q:Â How visible is the rush process? Do I have to come out to join or tell my family?
A:Â You do not have to come out to join Gamma Rho Lambda. Nothing will be posted of/about you without your consent. We won't write on your Facebook wall, or Instagram your photo, unless you would like us to. We understand that not everyone is out, or comfortable with letting people know about their involvement with an LGBT+ sorority. You decide what people know and when.
The actual rush process varies in visibility. There are times when you can be loud and visible about your interest in Gamma Rho Lambda. There are other times when you cannot for reasons that will be explained if you do actually get involved with our sorority.
Q:Â The motto ("Truth in Tolerance, Knowledge Through Diversity, Bonds of Unity, Strength in Trust") uses the word "tolerance." What do you mean by that? Shouldn't it be acceptance?
A:Â When our motto mentions tolerance, we don't use it to say that we tolerate people's differences. It's not like, "You're (this kind of way), and I tolerate that about your identity." It's meant to say that like with any family or group, you might not get along with everyone, yet you have to learn to work together and be around each other. It's not so much tolerant of who a person is, but how that person might make you feel and how to still thrive within the community if you do not necessarily love one of your siblings. Does that make sense?
Q:Â My question's not here. What do I do? Who do I ask?
A:Â If your question hasn't been answered, then you have choices for what you can do.

Q:Â I looked at your current members page on Wordpress, and you have terminology I don't understand. What are PGPs?
A: PGPs stands for Preferred Gender Pronouns. The pronouns that a person uses to identify themselves can vary between people, depending on their gender identity or what they feel comfortable with. Some common gender pronouns are she/her/hers, he/him/his, they/them/theirs, and ze/zim/zir. We included PGPs on our site so that people could know how to refer to our members, if they needed to. You can ask someone when you meet what their PGPs are because they might not always be what you expect. Including PGPs helps with not misgendering anyone, so we figured we might as well add them to the site.
