Naomi Murakawa & #BlackLIvesMatter: Liberals, Guns & US Prison System Published on Dec 14, 2015
We keep hearing there’s mistrust between police officers and communities of color - as if the relationship just needs repairing. But the fact is, police don’t suffer from a deficit of procedure, they suffer from an excess of power, and liberal procedural forms are not going to change that, says this week's guest, Naomi Murakawa. In fact, liberals as much, if not more than, conservatives have expanded our criminal code so as to produce today’s mass-incarceration state. What do we need to do? Not tweak -- transform, says Murakawa And we would do well to throw out our language about police brutality and profiling. The problem's way bigger. Naomi Murakawa is an associate professor of African American Studies at Princeton and the author of The First Civil Right: How Liberals Built Prison America. Also this week: The Laura Flanders Show has been on the streets, and in this studio, with activists from the Black Lives Matter movement from the very first days. Today we present a look back at some highlights from our coverage. All that and a few words from Laura comparing mandatory minimums from 1790 to today.
I shared a link about this interview yesterday. I can’t believe I missed it when it was originally posted since I watch a lot of Laura Flanders’ content. Great interview and worth watching. Also, Flanders covered the BLM movement pretty much from the beginning and her interviews are a great resource for anyone trying to understand it right form the mouth of the organizers.

Can a socialist choose Hillary over Bernie? Playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner discusses Socialism, Zionism, Hollywood, and the 2016 elections. Tony Kushner has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, an Emmy Award, two Tony Awards, two Academy Award nominations, and President Obama presented him with the National Medal of Arts in 2013. Last fall he was entered into the National Theater Hall of Fame - and no wonder; among his plays are Angels In America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes; and The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures. His many screenplays include Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln and Munich. He has also written or edited several books, including Wrestling with Zion: Progressive Jewish-American Responses to the Palestinian/Israeli Conflict. Later in the program, Laura visits with a Roma Gallery in Hungary that embraces Hip Hop and bell hooks. All that and a few words from Laura on recent political upheavals in Hungary.
Laura seems to be extra excited to be talking to Kushner in this interview lol. I watched Angels in America a couple of years back and I loved it. This is really enjoyable and worth watching. She also has a lot of other great interviews in her YouTube channel worth checking out!

A look at the historical and present-day connections between democracy, land, housing and economic development. The history of the US is packed with people of color and poor people who’ve been stripped of their rights - to vote, to wages, to housing or even just the right to stay in the country - through incarceration, segregation, slavery and deportation. For just as long, black communities have created safety, and won a say in democracy, through buying and keeping land cooperatively. It’s not just history, either. Mark Scott is an organizer of #blacklandmatters, a group working today, and Tia Powell Harris is the director of the Weeksville Heritage Center, Brooklyn’s largest African-American cultural institution, which is dedicated to preserving the history of the 19th century African American community of Weeksville - one of America’s first free black communities. We also look at Working World - an organization dedicated to supporting worker-owned cooperatives around the US.
