Inktober 2021 day 2: Gawain and Ceincaled (Gringalet)
Some more Inktober.
This is the point at which someone usually comes along and steals Gawain’s horse. (Ceincaled / Gringalet roams absolutely freely because Gawain knows his faithful horse would never abandon its master.) This is a Big Deal and a source of Great Anguish to both horse and knight.
Day 4 of Inktober 2019: Gawain and a particularly affectionate Gringalet.
Once more, I undertake a valiant quest in attempting to post one drawing each day in October. I will probably fail, as I do each year, but here is number 1. It’s a pretty bad number 1, but that means I can only do better in the future :P.
PS: this year, the plan is to draw something related to my Gawain comic each day. Because yes, that still exists, and I draw far too little relating to my characters.

A wonderful fragment from the 13th-century Middle-Dutch romance Walewein ende Keye ('Gawain and Kay'):
As Gawain reaches a clearing in a forest, he decides to rest there. He takes off Gringalet's saddle and allows the horse to roam freely, trusting that his faithful companion would never leave him. But while Gawain is sleeping, a forrester spots the horse and wants to take it and offer it as a gift to his lord. Gringalet, of course, doesn't want to go with the stranger. The forrester drives him into a marsh, thinking the horse will be easier to catch there.
At that moment, Gawain wakes up and, seeing that Gringalet is gone, becomes very worried. He calls out for his horse (my clumsy translation):
Ay Gringalet, where are you now? It is unfaithful of you, and most unkind, to leave me standing here alone in need. Do I have to go on foot now? That hasn't happened to me often before. Such faithlessness is not like you at all!
When Gringalet hears his master call out, he returns immediately, much to Gawain's joy. And the quest continues.
- Funny detail: Gawain addresses Gringalet with "ghi" ("you" as opposed to "thou", or "u" in modern Dutch, or "Sie" in modern German). In the Dutch romances, the bond between Gawain and Gringalet is very strong and the horse is really a character :).
The whole romance is online, incidentally. If you can read Middle-Dutch, go here: Walewein ende Keye.
