To begin, Emmeryn’s mental/emotional issues can mostly be summed up to extreme anxiety, guilt complex, and internalized sins-of-the-father bullshit. I’m only going to talk about pre-fall stuff here, so these are her hang ups. She constantly blames herself for the state of Ylisse and Plegia. She has internalized and taken on her father’s mistakes as part of herself, which is why she is so anxious and stressed about her position as Exalt.

And a large reason for this? The beginning of her Exalthood. She was crowned at a very young age, and immediately, she was rejected by her own people. Hated. They stoned her in the street and openly shouted their distain, citing her father’s self-righteous tyranny as their motivations. Of course, Emmeryn internalized all of that and blamed herself. Because SHE was Exalt now, like her father had been. And she should have known better, even as a child, and tried to make her father stop the war.
