the  ring  upon  her  finger  tells  her  she  is  married   ;       the  ring  on  mulder’s  finger  tells  her  he  is,   too.      she  wears  a  white  dress,     simple  lace,    low  neckline  to  show  the  collarbones  he  has  been  prohibited  from  nipping  all  week  to  stay  pure  for  this  matrimony.       only  a  handful  of  people  were  invited  to  partake  in  celebration,    only  a  handful  of  people  they  trust  or  care  for  enough  to  include.      reception,    reserved  tables  at  favored  dc  hangout.      happy  hour.     beer  and  champagne.     this  round  is  on  her  mother.

 doggett  was  invited  on  her  behest  and  her  husband’s  indifference,    the  history  between  the  two  men  shaky  in  a  euphemiszed  way.     his  presence  there  touches  an  already  bursting  heart,    a  truth  she  stole  away  with  him  in  attempt  to  communicate.      he  looks  good  in  his  suit.     he  looks   tired.       he  cried  when  he  saw  her  in  white.       ❝    i  know  none  of  this  has  happened  in  a  traditional  way.    ❞       pregnancy  and  aliens   and  abduction  and  death  and  aliens  and  government  conspiracies  and  life  lived  on  exile  on  the  run.        and  aliens.       understatement  of  the  decade  for  a  decades’  worth  of  love  and  loss  and  insanity.       ❝   your  support  means  everything  to  me.      it  always  has.    without  you,    i  don’t  know  what  i  would  have ,  ,  ,    back  when  he   was  gone .  .  .     i’ve  never  forgotten.   ❞  

her  eyes  wander  across  the  room  to  the  object  of  her  affection.      in  the  few  moments  since  she  has  been  gone  from  his  side,    he  has  managed  to  askew  his  tie.       she  wonders  in  passing  if  perhaps  such  action  was  purposeful,     a  ploy  designed  to  ensnare  her  upon  her  return,     compelled  to  correct  his  appearance.     she  delights  in  the  motion.      the  small  of   her  back  tingles  where  she  knows  he  will  place  his  hand,    pull  her  closer  against  him,     settle  his  fingers  on  her  hip.      she  will   place  her  hand  on  his  chest  or  his  abs  and  his  heart  will  race.     a  soft  smile  tugs  on  her  lips  at  the  mere  thought,     her  response  already  glistening  in  her  eyes.

he  speaks  but  makes  no  eye  contact,       stares  out  window  in  passive  observance  of  clouds  cut  like  cotton  by  the  wings  of  the  plane.        she  follows  his  gaze,    though  vantage  point  is  inferior  to  his  from  the  window  seat.           /            he  had  proffered  such  placement  for  the  taking,    as  always,     dogged  determination.      she  had  declined,    as  always,     equal  insistence.     i’ll  be  up  and  down  at  least  twice  to  pee.       (   and  will  count  herself  lucky  if  that  is  all  she  needs  expel  on  this  flight.  )      MIDDLE  GROUND ?      acceptance  of  his  pillow,     tucked  now  behind  her,     better  lumbar  support.       (  her  back  will  ache  still.     her  whole  body  already  aches.   )    

justice  was  served,     but  the  platter  was  cold  by  the  time  it  reached  the  table.      a  quadruple  murder - suicide,    their  reports  will  read,     though  questions  linger  about  the  nature  of  the  perpetrator’s   death,      had  the  man  with supernatural   characteristics   truly  ended  his  own  life ?        or  had  the  magic  /  voodoo  /  curse  /  deal  with  the  devil  he  had  made  simply  run  its  course ?             /           AND  IT’S  HARD,      she  knows,     to  swallow  something  like  that,      to  look  into  the  eyes  of  victims’  families  and  give  them  swiss  cheese  answers.       to  board  this  plane,    to  go  home,     to  lay  head  to  pillow  and  feel  any  sort  of  contentment,     any  consolation  that  the  job  is  done  and  done  well.        arduous,    yet  straightforward  police  work,      the  meat  and  potatoes,      that’s  where he  thrives.        the  x - files,   where  such  is  only  adequate  sustenance  to  a  point,      that’s  where  he  struggles.        (  she  knows  all  too  well.     it  is  where  they  BOTH   struggle,      to  begin  with.  )

absently  does  her  hand  fall  to  her  stomach,     habit  developed  over  these  months.        fabric  of  this  shirt  is  restricting  and  she  longs  for  her  apartment,    a  shower,   a  robe,     no  pants     -------------       back  on  task,    eyes  of  blue  find  his  face,     survey  his  expression  from  this  sideways  vantage  point.     how  many  times  did  she  occupy  his  current  position  ----   right  down  to  the  posture  ----   the  sagging  shoulders  and  the  hung  head.    what  affirmations  did  HER   counterpart  provide?

NEITHER  OF  THEM  SHOULD  BE  AT  WORK  RIGHT  NOW   ;       both  know  it,     surely,     yet  neither  has  reprimanded  other.      (   fear  of  exposing  own  hypocrisy,    perhaps ?      certainly  true  of  her.  )         for  many  hours  they  have  sat  here,    filling  silence  with  clacking  of  keyboards  and  shuffling  of  papers,     exciting  variety  when  one  or  the  other  rises  to  open  filing  cabinet  with  signature   click  and  squeal.       neither  took  a  lunch  break,    neither  wants  to  stop  and  be  forced  to  smell  the  roses   ;       they  are  all  dead  or  trampled  into  the  ground  with  no  hope  of  being  replanted.          

she  coasts.       she  struggles  with  feeling  grounded  to  the  passing  of  time,     she  struggles  with  desire  to  be  tethered  to  this  shaky  ground.      so  she  coasts,    cruise  control,    autopilot.       she  breezes  through  reports,     among  the  most  straight - forward  she  has  ever  composed.      they  are  behind  on  reports.       they’ve  been  given  dispensation  for  being  behind.       (   there  have  been  extenuating  circumstances,    she  can  hear  skinner’s  voice  say  just  across  his  desk  a  thousand  miles  away.    in  both  of  your  lives.   )           but  she  will  not  have  it.      not  anymore.       she  will  not  stop,    she  will not  slow.

he  has    ;       he  is.        she  notices  gradually  and  without  hint  of  judgment.     elongated  pauses  between  bursts  of  typing  and  forced  breaths.    a  frustration,     a  kind  of  pure   exhaustion  she  knows  well    ———  or  would  if  ever  she  truly  allowed  these  emotions  to  make  her  acquaintance.     she  passes  by  such  feelings  on  the  streets  daily,    multiple  times  a  day,     and  always  turns  her  head,      claims  ignorance,    will  not  acknowledge  a  familiar  that  feels  predatory.    

i  think  i  got  too  many  memories  getting  in  the  way  of  me.      his  words  the  first  in  some  time.     she  nods.     she  understands.        BRAIN  FOG.     she  thinks  of  smoke  from  a  devastating  inferno,      firefighters  rushing  into  the  flames  in  hopes  of  salvaging  that  which  is  already  lost,      everything  one  loves  reduced  to  ash.        she  thinks  of  smog  in  the  heart  of  a  bustling  city,      how  one  can  choke  on  something  so  thick  and  heavy  and  invisible  and  drown  in  broad  daylight.      she  thinks  again  of  smoke  and  paints  it  black.      a  chemical  reaction,    potassium,    perchlorate,   anthracene,   sulphur,    thick  black  billows  over  the   sistine  chapel.     there  is  no  new  pope  to  find  belief  in.

the  dim  light  of  her  table  lamp  paints  them  both  in  warm  oranges  and  golds,    oven  light  in  the  kitchen  behind  them  casting  a  slightly  cooler  hue.       a  quietness  permeates  both  these  spaces  and  the  shadows   that  surround   them.       a  parallel   :       the  darkness  of  night  outside    broken  by  georgetown  streetlamps,         the  thinly-veiled  threats  and  mysteries  of  life  beyond  that,     the  dangers,   the  trauma,     interrupted  only  by  these  moments  of  reprieve  so  fleeting.       it  unnerves  her,     how  imminently  such  perils  creep,     how  steadily  they  persist.      straight   for  her  most  beloved,     barreling  without  mercy  through  those  who  dare  stand  in  the  way.     

he  has  stood  in  the  way,      and  he  —  incredibly  —  still  stands  now.     he  wears  his  coat,   and  she  wears   a  large  sweater  masquerading  as  housecoat.        he  offers  these  words,    which  are  more  than  simply  words,   and  she  lowers  her  eyes.       /       mere  days  ago,     she  wept  at  his  bedside,    hot  and  heavy  tears  of  guilt  and  grief  that  he  awoke  to  discover.      these  apologies  were  heavy,    and  among  her  pantheon  of  fears  rests  that  she  has  forced  him  to  carry  them  now.        never  was  this  meant  to  be  his  crusade,     never  was  his  blood  meant to  be  spilled  in  this  fight.        long  as  she  known  and  lamented  this,    but  especially  sharply  is  she  cognizant  of  that  now,      as,    in  spite  of  everything,   he  speaks  of  more.

       ❝ you do realize this is why people think we’re a couple, right ? ❞ but she’s grinning up at him when she says it, fingers linking through his and giving his hand a soft SQUEEZE. ❝ goodnight, john. get home safe, okay ? ❞
