With the special Congressional Primaries being pushed up this year, yesterday showed a very low voter turnout. Despite all of this, there were some very competitive races and well-ran campaigns. Yesterday New York was the host of some key contested races in varying Congressional Districts (CDs). CD-5, which is Southeast Queens and now some parts of Nassau County, had Incumbent Congressman Meeks defeating his opponents Allan Jennings, Joseph Marthone, and Mike Scala decisively. Meeks is projected to win the General Election in November over his Republican opponent and will have the huge task of incorporating Nassau County into this newly formed district. Also in Queens, CD-6, Assemblywoman Grace Meng was able to be the victor over City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley, Assemblyman Rory Lancman, and Robert Mittman. If Meng wins the general election in November, it will make her the first Asian-American in New York to enter Congress. In CD-7 Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez was able to hold on strong and fight off three opponents for the win. State Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries was chosen by the Democratic voters in CD-8 over City Councilman Charles Barron to replace the retiring Ed Towns of Brooklyn.Also in Brooklyn, CD-9, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke was the victor as she faced Sylvia G. Kinard. In one of the toughest battles and turn of events, Incumbent Charles Rangel was able to fend off State Senator Adriano Espaillat for CD-13. CD-16, which is northern Bronx and Southwestern Westchester County, Congressman Eliot Engel was able to win over Attorney Aniello Grimaldi.
