Hey you know what I think weāre ready to talk about how fucking terrible king falls am is. This isnāt like a fuckingĀ ācallout postā or whatever Iām just genuinely sick to death of seeing people lauding this racist, ableist, sexist show as some sort of progressive wonder just cause it had one gay character. Hereās what it did, in neat list form so you donāt have to do any critical thinking:
Had an older black character who was a caricature of black american culture (jazz, smooth voiced, chill, specific accent), and then made him a sexual predator who specifically relentlessly persues a younger white woman.Ā
Had a native american character portrayed as a literal cryptid. Treated him like he was some sort of inherently mystical otherworldly being with strange powers, and genuinely only explained it by way of him being native american. As if he wasnāt a human just cause heās indigenous. As if they forgot indigenous people exist in todayās world too.
Used a sk*nw*lker as a monster specifically associated with said native american character.
Had their main sympathetic characters consistently refer to Native Americans asĀ āindiansā and made fun of the guy who corrected them (āI think the progressive term is native americanā) as some sort of vague, naive, stoner hippie.Ā
Had a sympathetic character use the R slur multiple times, as a way of dunking on a minor villain. Never offered any sort of apology or acknowledgement that it was shitty.
Greg Frickard is really, really autistic coded. Having an autistic coded villain is bad enough, having him be a creepy, manipulative, gross abuser is so much worse, and using said creepiness as a justification to make relentless fun of his autistic traits is fucking wild (sammy and ben are so quick to mock the frog thing, and the social ineptitude, and the fact that he lives with his grandmother and isnāt self sufficient). Like genuinely how dare they. Not to mention theĀ āpathetic effeminate villainā trope.
Had one (1) important female character in the first few seasons, and her only role was shy love interest, then damsel in distress, then damsel in distress again, then back to love interest. Like this is fucking ancient greece or something.Ā
Thereās more stuff but I havenāt listened since last year so I canāt remember it all.
Okay thank you for your time. I know itās got good narrative style and builds tension well and has good drama and stuff but unless they make clear change away from all the awful bullshit I donāt think good writing is enough of a redemption. Plus good GOD is their inclusion of lgbt stuff trope-y and performative. We canāt keep excusing obvious and malicious racism, sexism and ableism for the sake of one white gay character. So yeah. FuckĀ āem.
