Walking through Athens in Summer is beautiful. The Greeks celebrate it as if its return was unwarranted. In a country with 300 days of sunshine. Life spills out onto the tiny, crooked alleyways in the historical center - Monastiraki, Plaka, and Psyri. A table to sit down with a cold drink is always in reach, the smell of fresh food lazily lingers in the air. All ages gather as the sun speaks out an invitation to all. A true gem of the city is Anafiotika. Widely ignored by tourists, it lies nestled against the Acropolis. The bright white walls bake in the sun, plants are carefully placed in the bends of the narrow footpaths like bursts of color. Everything here is quiet and intimate. Like entering someone's living-room for the first time, full of memories, collected over a long period of time. Fine details on walls and doors speak of care and affection for the place called home. On the way down, I saw this couple. Gentle and loving, they were floating in a world of their own making. Unaware of my presence, I took this snapshot. Feeling guilty and happy at the same time. Guilty on account of my intrusion, happy for making the moment last. The truly spectacular location on Elafonisos is Simos Beach in the South, only 10 min by car from the very North. Yes, it is a very small island. ;) White sand beaches engulfed by the sea’s infinite shades of indigo and turquoise fall nothing short of the post card idyll of the Caribbean - although a comparison seems inappropriate. What strikes one first upon arrival is the sonorous chirping of the crickets. Like a symphony conducted by summer, invisibly performed.  Of all the pictures I took there, this one stands out to me.  Because, to me, it is a warm, unspoken invitation to explore and unravel, with love in your heart, the marvels of our world.  Be it as majestic as a sunset or as wondrous as the sound of a cricket. Things big or small, close or far away. Life is everywhere and its creativity overwhelming. All it takes is a second look, a second thought, a short wavering about something we have the illusion of being familiar with. Familiarity, the assumption of knowing anything, is the death of marvel and discovery.   The journey of discovery, therefore, starts within. With the admittance that our view is limited. With a willingness to look again. With the acceptance that there is more than a familiar surface. Moving from appearance to essence. On our way out of Monemvasia, we passed the town’s graveyard. Graveyards have always fascinated me with their symbolism of eternity, like islands unmoved by the breaking waves of a turbulent sea. Stubborn reminders that there might be more to life than the tangibility of our senses. Its millennia-old cultural heritage often contrasting with the transience of its enveloping world. Loss, a child of love, is the traveler between these worlds. Because, regardless of faith or religion, love always crosses over. It transcends any teachings, any instructions, any right or wrong, while embracing all of it. The moment of loss is therefore also a moment of opportunity. The opportunity to find wisdom within. To find comfort in our own thoughts and feelings, when religion will speak to us of life hereafter, but little of the pain of our remaining days. To depend on ourselves for the answers we long for. At least, for some time. Maybe forever.
