Please do use chatbots in any way you want to tell yourself stories or as a tool. Nobody owns the written word, but sometimes people own the order of it.

Please do not post chatgpt stories as your own.

1) You do not have the absolute knowledge needed to know when you are plagiarising.

2) you do not have the cultural knowlege to recognise where chatgpt is getting its influences from. Ex: I once tested chatgpt to tell me a story using Hindu names and it spit out a summary of the mahabharta without mentioning the mahabharta by name)

3) you do not have the specialized knowledge to recognise when chatgpt is lying to you

Posting chatgpt written works as your own will contribute to sludge, gray works, bad fiction, a total reduction in quality of the written word via those works being fed back as material. If you use it this way, the tool will become less useable the more it is used, and then you won't have it anymore.

I think these concepts have had a net negative effect on the world. I think we should go back to signing our works as Homer, Aesop, Publius etc.

Fanfiction writers should just outright sign their works as Anne Rice, JKR, Gene Rodenberry. Let the popularity of the work determine if its canon. Let there be multiple canons.

Don't do that, you will get sued.

What about the small creators? We should be living in a society that is a lot closer to post-scarcity, so anyone who wants to should be able to be small creators. That we aren't living in that world is because capitalism and the massive greed of the people who are stealing the work and creativity outright with the huge mechanisms of their powerful law firms.

All ideas are derivative. Nothing is original. If you think you've had an original idea, you probably stole it from your grandmother, who didn't publish it.

The value of a story isn't in its originality. It isn't because it came first. It shares a perspective that is unique to the person who made it. That perspective, that STORY (the story of its creation) is included in the work, the art, and is way more important than the order of the words on the page.

And it exists in derivative works. It exists in generated works too, a little bit. Someone after all probably did order the prompt, and decide to share the work, and thousands of people's perspectives are included as input (and these things become biases, and those are interesting to study as well) and there is the corperate perspective and the programmer's perspective. But the water is muddied. grey.

We recognise the fingerprint of perspective, and it sings to us, and it's what makes art call out to us.

And that's what we should fear losing as perspective is washed away in the sea of algorithm enhanced content generation. You don't even need machine generation to do it, content farms have been making work that is indestinguishable from machine generated works for years, with nothing but access to data.
