I’m so excited about what I’ve found today. 

Look, a third of the world is without access to electricity. A THIRD. That’s about 2 billion people that have to rely on sources like kerosene to light their homes. This is known as lighting poverty.

This is what happens: 

780 million women and children breathing particulate laden kerosene fumes inhale the equivalent of smoke from two packs of cigarettes a day.

The result is that two-thirds of the adult female lung cancer victims are non-smokers. 

poor ventilation and fuel-based lighting poses serious debilitating health hazards such as respiratory and eye problems. In developing nations, acute respiratory infection, influenza and pneumonia kill nearly two million children annually. 

And that’s not even addressing general safety and costs of heating/lighting homes with this stuff (hint: it can be up to a fifth of household income) 

There’s a lot of alternative energy out there, but the one that’s really getting me happy today? Gravitylight. 

It’s a light. Powered by gravity. And costs nothing to create energy. 

Kids can do homework now. People can see what they’re doing. Their health will improve. That’s just the beginning. One pull creates 30 minutes of energy. NO BATTERIES.

This light is not powered by gas or electricity, but by gravity. “GravityLight is free, it’s free to use, and as well doesn’t require any kind of energy.” The light is powered by a kinetic motor driven by a weight, and doesn’t require any kind of electricity. “Take the GravityLight out of the bag, hang it somewhere on the wall, put a stone or sand in that bag, pull it up, it gives you light. That’s how simple it works.” Unlike dirty kerosene lamps, GravityLight causes zero emissions and costs nothing to run. “This one is something which is really helping my children because they don’t get sick.
