Gravinosity: The State of Non-Neutrality
Gravinous is a word I coined for genders, qualities, aspects, and alignments that are not neutral because I needed a word that could help me discuss my own relationship with neutrality compared to non-neutralities. Another way to refer to this quality is non-neutral, which I’ve often used in conversations about maverine identities and similar. But what does it mean to have a gender that is not neutral? Why do people align with gravinosity?
There are tons of genders out there that are gravinous: Man, woman, maverique, ilyagender, all other outherine genders, and both androgynous genders and aporagenders if they’re specifically not neutral.
How do we define gender neutrality? Typically, neutrality refers to two main aspects: Being unaligned with masculinity and femininity, or having a lack of genderedness or alignment in general. What comes to mind are genders like neutrois, epicene, and agender. Gravinous has none of the aforementioned aspects found in these genders.
Neutrality has quite a few different uses as a term because it goes beyond being a gender term. Below are some common definitions of neutrality and how gravinosity contrasts with them.
Belonging to neither kind; not one thing or the other; indefinite.
Gravinous has no recognition of a dichotomy and cannot be compared to any binary. Gravinous genders aren’t meant to draw comparisons to the binary or be defined by their relationship to a binary, as there is none. Gravinosities lack ambiguity and thus are explicit, not indefinite.
Not decided or pronounced as to characteristics; or: having features or characteristics that are not easily noticed.
Gravinosity is assured, with readily noticeable and obvious characteristics. It is also unambiguous. Again, gravinous genders and qualities are not ambiguous, unknown, or vague. Genders like maverique are distinctly not ambiguous and many have a strong sense of gender, which makes them very clear and straightforward in their genderedness.
Not causing or reflecting a change in something.
Gravinosity is active and acts on other part of one's gender. Non-neutrality is not a passive quality and can influence the rest of one’s gender.
Gravinosity often has an alignment. Maverinities are a type of gravinous quality that are “strongly gendered”, with an alignment to an assured gender. In this context, “unaligned” refers to the original coining of stellarian: Unaligned with the binary or rejecting alignment altogether.
The descriptor of gravinosity is specifically meant for genders and qualities that are distinct, noticeable, tangible, certain, and assertive. Neutrality assumes something that is diluted, missing, or empty - quite the opposite of gravinosity, which is filled with gendered aspects, is present, and is not a lack of qualities, elements, or aspects. Many people might see their genders in this way, that they have an assured genderedness that doesn’t exist in the background as some passive thing.
