Last August 9, 2016, my Facebook wall is bombarded with the reactions of my fellow netizens regarding the ‘MRT Girl’ incident. The viral story started when a Facebook post of Karla Monique Olandesca (MRT Girl) claimed to be disrespected by a guy named Aldrin Ryan Alcon in a sense that he didn’t offer her a seat during her ride in MRT. She also stated that the guy is “Un-gentleman” considering that he already saw her in front yet she saw no sense of generosity. The last part of her post was filled with tease and judgment where she said “Kung Ano Yung Kina-Pangit Ng Mukha Mo.. Yung Din Kina-Pangit Ng Ugali Mo. Bagay Na Bagay yung Mukha Mo Sa Ugali. Perfect Combination Pare! Haha!”
The guy in the photo posted a status extending his apology to Karla and explained the reason why he wasn’t been able to give his seat.
Is the experience worth sharing online?
What happened to MRT Girl after posting?
She’s backfired. Instead of winning the sympathy of others she gained bashers that expressed their anger to Karla by giving painful comments. Most of them advised her to take private transportation if she’s after the comfort while commuting.
Some bashers have gone far, they even publicized MRT Girl’s personal life and livelihood. So due to the negative publicity, Karla deactivated her Facebook account.
Does venting out in social media advisable?
The answer is NO. Yes, a big NO. So my dear fellas in order to avoid this kind of events you must always remember to “Think Before You Click”. Remember that SNS is not your personal diary. This mindset is not only useful while posting because it can be also used as a precautionary reminder when clicking hyperlinks. For example, you saw an advertisement declaring that you won 1 million dollars and all what’s left for you is to click it in order to claim your prize. Will you click it? NO. You can be the youngest millionaire in the Philippines. NO. You really need that big amount. NO. Just kidding. I’m just testing you if you’ll fall for that lame trap. The right questions are: What will happen if I click it? I just visited a website and in an instant I will be a millionaire? Quite fishy huh. Will my PC catch a malware? What will happen to my files if my PC caught a malware? What will happen if they gathered personal information about me? These are just some of the questions you must ask before clicking.
Last reminder, think not only twice but many times and deeply ponder before clicking that and those and this. For a single match can make an explosion.
