As we begin a new project for Material and Media, we aren't able to have class due to it falling on Anzac Day. We were asked to complete self-directed learning at home. I began by looking into the brief for this project so I have an understanding of what we are expected to produce for a final outcome. I have come to understand that we are to produce a Kinetic type animation featuring an assigned audio clip of a historic or public speech. We are to include a title and credits, which will be between 40-75 seconds. We are to use Full HD (1920x1080 pixels) with 25 frames per second, and hand in as a mpeg-4. The due date is the 6th of June at 10am.

Kinetic typography is the art of animating text to increase it impact on readers through the emotive and interactive qualities of the text. Text is presented overtime, becoming temporal rather than static.

The ability to communicate emotion greatly contributes to achieving a successful and impactful design. the use of pacing to express a greater or lesser degree of urgency or bolding to convey tone.

There are two categories of kinetic typography, motion and fluid, the classification depends on the behaviour of the text. In motion typography, elements move in relation to one another while in fluid typography the letter forms themselves change even while remaining stationary.

The first two films that utilised kinetic type were "North by Northwest" in 1959 and "Psycho" in 1960, designed by Saul Bass.

There are more movies and tv shows than ever, which means more title design and more animated typography sequences. With the rise of the internet, it has led to motion typography being used on websites, apps and social media.

Kinetic typography is an animation technique that integrates motion with text. There is no fixed way that the text should be animated and the lettering can shrink and expand, move around the page, change colour, undergo distortion or be subject to any kind of creative technique. They can be short or long, elaborate or complex.

Its main focus is to capture the audience's attention. Manipulating and transforming text with movement can achieve a wide variety of effects—it can create emphasis where it is desired, it can convey emotion and conjure up ideas, and it can transform simple text into a powerful message. 

I found this animation compelling due to the combination of illustration with the type. I feel that this help to emphasise the audio of the clip. I feel that the pacing was executed well and each of the words had a visual connection to the audio. I found this to be rather successful as it keeps the view engaged and also doesn't need to listen to the clip to understand what is being said.

What I liked about this kinetic type is the multiple different transitions and the payment involved in introducing the type. I feel that this animation is clean and concise and the pace matches well from audio, visuals and the type. I really like this kinetic type of animation and I want to implement many different ways of introducing the type within my own animation.

What I like about this kinetic-type animation is the transition of each word and how significant/ dramatic they are. I feel that this connects well with the atmosphere of the animation, as it feels serious while also playful.

What I like about this animation is that the visuals are used to help support the points they are trying to communicate. I wouldn't say the type appears on the screen very interestingly, however, I feel that the most compelling elements are the creative visuals that have been included.

What I like about this animation is that is mainly focused on the type itself. I also found it interesting how they rotated the 'page' or the type to create a sense of difference and direction. I also like how they introduced small supporting visuals to help emphasise the important words or ideas.

This animation was interesting, but not a huge variation of how the type appeared on the screen. I did like to see the scrolling motion of type appear on the screen as a possible option. I found the addition of the thick lines to be rather distracting, even if type was to overlay it.

I found this GIF of the vote and I thought it was relevant to my speech as Georgina was able to be elected through the votes she received. I thought that this was a fun and interesting way to show vote, and has inspired and encouraged me to try and push the boundaries for the word myself and create an interesting animation. Maybe I could include something with a box being ticked?

What I like about these websites is how the type moves in relation to the page moving or even the cursor. Even though this isn't just a basic animation, I felt that this was still relevant to this project as it shows kinetic type used in other ways than just in video clips. Some of the designs that I like the most is the first one, due to the way the type appear and disappears from the screen, I find it really compelling and interesting. I also really like the 4th one with the slide image tabs as well as the sliding blocks of colour with the type. Even though it may be difficult way to read a body of text, I found the idea of the image boxes changing into colour very different and was something I haven't seen done before.

What I liked about this animation is how they explored the type's own feelings and were able to bring that idea to life. It has made me think about the certain words I may emphasise and see whether I am able to connect a certain emotion to those.

What I like about this animation is the fluidity of the type and the transitions between each word. I also really like their use of repetition and patterns to help communicate their idea.

By looking at these very different kinetic-type examples, I am looking forward to creating my own. I am wanting to maintain some seriousness to it to show respect to her and her role as mayor but I would still like to make it fun, playful and incorporate emotions as she has helped to change the lives of many people within New Zealand.

Throughout the second half of the semester, our project was to make an animation of our assigned audio clip of a historic or public speech, in the design theme of the speaker. My speech was Taika Waititi's acceptance speech when he won an Oscar for his film JoJo Rabit, the theme I was going for was comedic.

In the intro, I wanted to set the tone of the animation so I made the Oscars trophy fall on the intro text and made it fall down.

The typeface I used was "Obviously", this san serif font has a really informal with a high x-height and overall friendly look to it, so it fits my theme.

Throughout the animation I used emojis, this fits with the comedic theme of my animation. I was inspired by the 2degrees ads with the animated emojis.

For the swinging picture frame, I used the graph for a nice and smooth swinging animation and used ease out when the picture frame settles.

I wanted to keep my design system very simple and straightforward so that it highlighted the message of the speech. When I first bean to storyboard my animation, I wanted to include multiple illustrations to support the words that were featured on the screen. However, I am glad that I did not continue with these ideas as they would have been too literal of a connection towards the word, making them irrelevant.

I am pleased with the amount of scale I incorporated into my animation, as I feel that it helps to create an emphasis on the words that are the most important and will draw the viewer's attention towards them.
