ā Itās not too late to come back to me. ā
Ryder swallowed hard at Gracieās proposition. Merlin, it was tempting -- way too tempting -- to just fall back into her arms and act like the last few weeks had never happened. Like their complicated fake relationship had never been fake at all, and they could just pick up and be together as if nothing had gone on with him and Marley, or her and Piers, or her and Hugo, or... or whatever. The sixth years were a bloody mess, and it seemed like he and Gracie were hopelessly intertwined in it all... but he didnāt want that for her.
He missed her -- missed their charade, missed the little acts of affection he did by accident that made it seem like it wasnāt so fake after all -- but she deserved better than him. She deserved better than any of them -- so, so much better. Sheād been jerked around this way and that, put on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, and then everyone had blamed her for things falling apart, when Ryder really didnāt think she was this villain everyone made her out to be.
Gracie Wood deserved someone that was going to love her and only her, completely, unconditionally, and Ryder couldnāt be that person for her. He thought he could, somewhere down the road, but right now it wasnāt fair for him to waste her time when sheād had enough back and forth in the past couple of years to last a lifetime.
If he stayed, though... if he stayed and hashed out the details, and explained himself to her, heād cave. Heād kiss her senseless, hold onto her until someone forced him to let go, and heād cling to this moment without a care in the world for what tomorrow and other people might bring. That was the wrong thing to do this time, though. That wasnāt what she needed, and he couldnāt put her in that place again.
So instead, he shook his head reluctantly, mutteredĀ āYeah, it is too late,ā and turned his back to walk away. It wasnāt what he wanted, and right now, it wasnāt what she wanted either... but it was what she needed. Let Ryder be the bad guy this time; let Gracie have a reprieve from all the hurtful words and accusations people threw her way. Heād take the heat on this one, and maybe, just maybe, that would pave the way for things to finally be better for her the next time.
