gp18 Desmosedici #GP18
EMD GP18 with low nose, Northern Lines Railway, Saint Cloud, MN. Photo taken by me, 9/14/17 Oddly enough, this unit had a twin for a long time, and I believe it was traded in to lease two newer GPs, I believe a GP30 and a GP45 but I may be wrong. The Northern Lines Railway is owned by the same company that owns the South Shore Line. It runs put of the old Great Northern switching yard, servicing St. Cloud and the closer towns that still have rail access.

Number 1060 was built in August 1960 ( c/n 26118 ) as Seaboard Air Line 404, later Seaboard Coast Line 1060, then Seaboard System ( SBD ) 1060, then Indiana & Ohio 71, then BioFuel Energy Corp. 71, then Midwest Locomotive Works ( MWLX ) 6225.

McDoel Yard Power
We’re on the Louisville & Nashville, former Monon, in Bloomington, Indiana. The yard and local power is interesting today: an Alco RS36, number 913, built in 1963, and EMD GP18, number 900, built in 1960.
Please note the one-piece windshield on the latter unit. This indicates an early low-nose model on both GE and EMD models; it would soon be split into two to lower replacement costs.

Northbound on the Monon
This is a northbound L&N train on the former Monon. The first two images were made in Clear Creek, Indiana, where the train is passing by the small depot there. One may notice the semaphore dropping after the passing of the lead unit. The last picture was taken just a few miles up the line at McDoel Yard in Bloomington, Indiana.
The locomotives in the consist give us some nice examples of EMD first and second generation power here. There are two GP9s: number 545 was built in 1956 (former MP/C&EI) while number 516, which sports torpedo tubes, was built in 1957. There is one GP18: number 900 was built in 1960. And finally there is a GP30: number 1022 was built in 1962. That last model, the GP30, is when we move from first to second generation diesel power.
Three images by Richard Koenig; taken in the mid- to late-1970s.
