GP Proviron, the brand name for mesterolone, is a synthetic type of male sex hormone. Mesterolone, chemically known as 1-methyl-5%-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), is methylated (the addition of a methyl group –CH3) making it an active steroid very similar to natural DHT that does not convert into estrogen or progesterone (both female hormones) once in the body. GP Proviron has many positive effects on the body, including increasing muscle mass, enhancing testosterone levels and treating male sexual dysfunction. GP Proviron is almost as pure a DHT steroid as you will find out there. With DHT compounds such as proviron, you need not worry about any estrogen aromatization.

However, it has unique properties that make it a useful and effective enhancer, especially of testosterone. In normal levels in the body, testosterone is mostly inactive because most of it is bound by sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin. GP Proviron also has a great affinity for SHBG, so when administered, it will bind to the SHBG, leaving more testosterone free. The increase in free testosterone can then mediate anabolic activities, including protein synthesis, which in turn increases muscle gain.

Estrogen is only active and effective when bound to estrogen receptors. GP Proviron decreases the ability of these estrogen receptors, found in the muslces, to bind to estrogen, therefore decreasing the amount of active estrogen. In addition, GP Proviron has an affinity for the aromatase enzyme, which is the enzyme in the body that binds with testosterone and converts it to estrogen. When Proviron binds to the enzyme, it blocks testosterone from binding, therefore reducing the amount of estrogen produced. These effects result in a decrease in water buildup in the body, which gives the muscles a leaner, harder look. Proviron was popularized years ago as an anti-estrogen because it is has a high affinity to bind to the aromatase enzyme, so anabolic steroid (AS) users could use it to serve as their AI (aromatase inhibitor) replacement. Bodybuilders were using it during post cycle therapy (PCT); unfortunately, studies have shown GP Proviron does suppress LH (luteinizing hormone) – in some cases. As a result, high GP Proviron dosage can prevent the pituitary gland from recovering after a steroid cycle. Some users insist GP Proviron does not suppress the HPTA when used in PCT or during a bridge; however, this is up for debate. As a side note, some studies support long term use of proviron at high dosages without serious suppression. The science supports proviron use for PCT but not in every case.

Now that we have Aromasin, Arimidex and Letrozole, GP Proviron has become obsolete when it comes to anti-estrogen usage. We know that the true aromatase inhibitors (AI) are safe to use during post cycle therapy, and will not suppress your HPTA. Though, GP Proviron shouldn’t either.

Side Effects: Since GP Proviron is such a pure DHT derivative, we can logically say that it comes with sides, just like any other anabolic steroid. However, the side effects come from its DHT characteristics, so you can expect male pattern baldness issues, especially if you are prone to it. This is why those that choose DHT compounds and suffer from hair issues will run a 5alpha reductase inhibitor such as Finasteride, or Dutasteride, to counteract this side effect. DHT’s can also enlarge the prostate, but this is generally only in those that abuse them. As mentioned above, GP Proviron is not a c17 alpha-alkylated compound, so liver problems are not an issue with it. Many bodybuilder buy GP Proviron to use in between cycles to maintain muscle gains and libido. However, DHT will not do much in regard to maintaining muscle. And as with any drug, a tolerance is developed over time so using GP  Proviron to help a lagging libido will just add to further suppression once the use of the drug has ceased.

The main downside of GP Proviron is that since it contains no anabolic properties, it will not result in much muscle growth if used alone. It truly is a “kicker” to other steroids, most notably testosterone. And although it doesn’t cause water retention, it can increase blood pressure. DHT can also increase irritability if duration exceeds more than a few weeks.

There have recently been advances in natural alternatives to GP Proviron. Avenacosides have been shown to lower SHBG and to raise free testosterone by as much as 20%. Since GP Proviron is used mostly as an ancillary substance and does not have much of an effect of actual growth, more and more people are opting to go the natural route.

The possible androgenic side effects of GP Proviron include acne, hair loss and body hair growth. The androgenic side effects of GP Proviron are highly dependent on genetic predispositions; however, those who are predisposed will find sensitivity levels to be greater with this steroid than many others. However, it’s important to keep in mind if you are not predisposed such side effects of GP Proviron are impossible. If you are not predisposed to male pattern baldness hair loss will be impossible. If you are predisposed, while you’re going to lose your hair at some point no matter what you do the use of this steroid may speed up the rate of loss. The predisposition factor will also dictate the outcome as it pertains to acne and body hair growth. Important note – the 5-alpha reductase enzyme does not metabolize the Mesterolone hormone; there is no reduction to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), it’s already DHT. As a result, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors like Finasteride will not reduce or affect this steroid’s androgenicity and will offer no protection against androgenic effects. As it is significantly androgenic, the side effects of Proviron can include virilization in women; in fact, this anabolic steroid can promote such symptoms heavily. Virilization symptoms include body hair growth, a deepening of the vocal chords and clitoral enlargement. Virilization will be nearly impossible to avoid with this steroid and cannot be recommended to women.

Side effects of Proviron in men at a dose of 2 - 3 tablets are very small, so that Proviron in combination with a steroid cycle can be relatively safe to be taken over several weeks. Proviron is well tolerated by the liver and in the indicated doses of abnormal liver function will not occur. In athletes, accustomed to working under the motto "the more - the better" taking Proviron might cause something paradoxical about this. In the instructions for use of its drug it is written:" At high doses can lead to delay in the body of electrolytes and water, and as a result to edema. Those who daily take no more than 2 - 4 tablets, can not worry about it. Perhaps the most frequent side effect of Proviron - there should be more talk about the accompanying phenomenon - severe sexual overstimulation and in some cases, prolonged erection of penis.
