Mimir: Brother! Did you know that the people are looking to put on a play, to honour you and your many deeds since you arrive in our lands? Theyβve even cast people to play you and our wee lad!
Kratos: [Looking at the newly cast Atreus, expression softening, whispered gently] Baby Boyβ¦
Mimir: Did you say something Brother?
Kratos: [Indistinct Grumble, returning to his more laconic self]
Mimir: Aye, I figured as much.

It's so cold. My limbs are numb, my bones hurt. The rope is so tight, my skin is throbbing. I'm hungry, starving. My mouth is dry, I need water.

Atreus grunts as he and his father finish off the rest of the raiders, putting his bow into it's holder on his back. He looks around, not really paying attention to his father saying something about keeping his guard, hearing something more interesting, more important. He stalks over to a mass of bushes, his boots quietly crunching in the snow. Mimir makes a query, but Atreus pays him no mind. He needs to find the maker of this sound, the quiet whining, crying with labored breaths, the pain hanging in the air.
The bushes' branches are sharp from the cold, harsh against the boy's skin as he gently parts the way to see a small hiding spot made beneath the roots of a partially up-turned tree. Atreus gasps as he catches a glimpse of a tail, shifting closer to its owner that remains out of sight, hidden within the shadows. He carefully steps forwards, making sure to not disturb the animal.
Kratos says his son's name in warning, though he is shushed quickly.
Atreus crouches down as he approaches the tree-made cave, keeping his voice quiet and soft as to not startle the creature.
"Hey there. It's okay, I'm not gonna hurt you." He holds his hands out in a gesture of peace. The nervous creature shifts before cautiously bringing it's head forwards to sniff at the boy's outstretched hand. It's fur is dark and horribly matted, weighing the poor thing down. It's fearful eyes are sunken, face thin. It's quick breaths fan over Atreus's fingers, and it's leathery nose brushes his skin with a small whine once it understands that he is a friend.
Atreus smiles and gives the dog a few gentle pets, staring into it's pleading and...almost human eyes a moment before making a realization with a small gasp.
"Wait, you're a shifter! Aren't you?" The dog whines again and tries to lick his face as if confirming his theory.
"I thought so." The boy laughs softly and tries in vain to run his fingers through the poor creature's matted fur. Atreus' hand drifts forwards to the rope bound tightly to their neck, his face falling with dismay. The shifter whimpers and shrinks back slightly as the boy quickly takes out his daggar and brings it to their neck. Atreus gently shushes them, petting their fur once more to soothe them before carefully cutting the rope. It takes a minute, as the rope is very thick, but the shifter stays still, trusting him with their release.
The rope falls to the ground with a softΒ thump,Β and the shifter shivers as the cold air touches the raw skin of it's neck. They shake their heavy fur as they slowly stand up, their breaths labored with pain and effort. It's clear that they are weak, probably haven't eaten in days. A loud whine escapes their throat as they stretch, their joints popping painfully.
"There you go buddy, you can shift now." Atreus encourages gently, his hands hovering around them just in case they faulter. The shifter shakes their head with a huff as they take a fearful step back.
"You wanna wait until you're somewhere safer? That's understandable." Atreus says as he stands, turning to his father just as Mimir mutters a quiet, "must've been a long time, then."
And of course, Kratos knows what the boy asking before he even utters a word.
"We will take them." The man says with a small nod. He knows there will be no winning against his son's stubbornness when it comes to animals in need.
Atreus grins and looks back at the shifter standing beside him. He gives them a small nudge on their shoulder before he starts walking, speaking softly to them as they slowly follow.
"We're gonna take you home and give you some nice, warm food. Maybe even give you a haircut," Atreus says as he brushes his fingers over the large matts of fur that weigh the poor shifter down as they walk beside him.
"And I'm sure the wolves would love you, too. We have an empty space for you to sleep next to them if you want. ...Though I'm sure you'd rather sleep in the house with us." Atreus says with a smile. The shifter lets out a huff in agreement.
