What happened to the 'goth comics'?
Twenty years ago, my holy comic trinity wasn't anything like the spandex-and-cape-clad muscleheads of DC and Marvel. It was kinda weird when I'd say to people "oh, I love comics" and then have to explain that there was a whole world outside the superbatmen and ironspiderboys and whatnot, let alone trying to tell people that stories involving killer burned-out artists, rotting dead girls, and lesbian witches were somehow great things to read.
But hey. It was validating as hell to get my ass to Nottingham once in a while (I lived some 17 or so miles away in one of the UK's most-shittiest towns, Mansfield) to browse either Page 45 or Forbidden Planet and have an entire shelving rack in a dark corner dedicated to the things.
The "goth comics" section. I think in Forbidden Planet at least, they had a label that said as much.
I got into comics through these things. I thought the hypermasculine superhero world to be, well, actually naff as all hell and couldn't see why anybody would be entertained by any of that nonsense (even if I later temporarily changed my mind when Robert Downey Motherfucking Sexyface Jr. played Iron Man for a bit...) and wasn't "into" comics per se until an acquaintance showed me Lenore by Roman Dirge.
It was, well, wonky as all hell. I wouldn't go as far as to say it was 'badly' drawn, but it gave me hope that, well, if this dude's drawing like this and making comics, then so can I! And I did for a bit, with Lenore by association leading me to Jhonen Vasquez' own Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (which is these days basically my personal Holy Bible, kinda-sorta) and Serenity Rose by JV's fellow Invader Zim character designer Aaron Alexovich.
But what happened to this shit?
The publisher of this trinity, Slave Labor Graphics, seems to be a shadow of what they used to be - still publishing books, but their website seems happy enough to coast along selling what leftover Vasquez stuff they've still got in stock. But I just don't see any books of this ilk anymore.
Not really, and I do trawl my local Forbidden Planet in Sheffield quite regularly; lurking over the 'indie' section, as good as I can get, mostly to look out for new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stuff but also to check out anything spooky-looking. And there's not an awful lot save for reprints of the JTHM and (related side-story) Squee! trades.
Shame. Gap in the market? Dunno. Regardless, I'm drawing my own anyway...
Just some thoughts.
