Mise-en-scene: the arrows and swords signifies the type of battle that is being fought, an old-fashioned war. The fur coats and scarves being worn by the characters show what kind of environment the war is being fought in, which is more established when we see that they are in the snowy mountains on top of a frozen lake. The greasy hair, and messy beard shows that the characters have been sleeping roughly, they haven’t been sleeping properly, or gone home and cleaned themselves. The flags held by the opposition show the nobility and loyalness that the army opposition have for the crown they are fighting for, and also establishes what the war is being fought by. The pickaxes, helmets, guards and chest protectors so how aggressive and in what manner the army opposition intend to fight, and how serious they are to fight.
Camerawork: the establishing shot show us where the characters are and what kind of environment they are in, the medium shot of the characters gives the viewers a thought on what the characters could be like, the close up and extreme close up show us what emotions they are feeling, giving us a sense of what kind of situation they could be in. The dolly shot reveals to us that there is an army opposition, and the BEV (bird’s eye view) and WEV (worm’s eye view) tells us who is thought to be inferior and superior. The forward shot tells us that the war begins between the two opponents, and the outward shot shows us what the distance between the two is. The panning shot gives us an overview of the situation. The tracking shot of both the flying arrow and the ice signifies what their actions are and the result of their actions. The crab shot gives us a more vivid visual of what is happening. The POV tells us what the characters are seeing and gives us a hint at what they are thinking.
Editing: the crosscutting between the characters gives us a view of them to give us a hint at to what they are thinking. The transitions between the two opponents show us how they fight. The jump cut gives us a sense of seriousness of the characters. The shot-reverse-shot shows us what is happening between and what the opponents are doing. The slow and fast motions emphasise certain aspects of the scene to the viewer.
Sound: the noises being made by the arrow shows us of one of the ways that the characters are fighting. The breaking of the ice shows the danger that is present in the scene. The constant beat of drums signifies the seriousness of the situation. The non diegetic sounds help explain what is happening, and the diegetic sounds help us to see it more vividly. The constant shouts and orders show that one man is clearly in charge. The shouts of pain and death gives us a sense of being in the situation.
