CHILD, HE CALLS HER? Low, hungry cracks of thunder echo in the distance, biting at the tips of her fingers to be released in fuller force, to indulge in their master's anger. What a craft he makes out of manipulation! His darkness seems warm, like a den instead of an abyss, shelter instead of a void. She should punish him with her light, cold and brutal and precise, and let the storm ring out in triumph.
But the truth is, she is unnerved by him. If this is a test, if this is bait, she will not rise. She leaves the storm of her anger to its rumbling, and instead lets her soul sink, and sink, and sink. She is fog, slow and obscuring. A predator, belly laid close to the earth as it stalks prey.
"You think I carry the world as a punishment? I do no such thing." Her voice, ever regal, conveys only very little of the offense she's truly taken. "The earth and its creations are the children I have borne. Perhaps you view children as a punishment, but do not paint me with the same brush as your failures."
If only her agony were so simple, her exhaustion so easily remedied. She could simply wipe the canvas of earth clean, and pull it back to formless, primordial sea. No seasons to plan, no migrations to herald. No, the wound is deeper. Septic with loneliness and with shame. For if her own father couldn't even love her, how could anyone else...?
Her voice gains a poisonous edge.
"What good would naming the pain do? Everyone can already see it. Thanks to Sanderson, my tragedy is laid out for all to see like some wretched vivisection, and you think naming it would be better?"
Bitterness now curves her lips into a faint facsimile of a smile, and against the growing darkness, a haunting green-blue bioluminescence creeps from beneath her hair and from her mouth.
"No. You only wish for me to name it so that you and your Fearlings can devour me whole."
