In 1974, I would hear “Let the Children Play”/“Jugando” by Santana on the Philco AM radio of my family’s Torino 500. I wondered what the lyrics meant beyond the literal…. Followed by Kool & the Gang’s “Open Sesame,” a path of sensuality opens, clarified by Parliament’s “Flash Light” into the cryptic code of Little Sister’s “You’re the One (Pts. 1 & 2)”. “Hydraulic Pump” by P-Funk All Stars keeps a steady energy flow simmered by Claudja Barry’s “Love For the Sake of Love”.

“¡Gózame ya!” by Susana Estrada and “Love Hangover” by Diana Ross are swirls of emotion with exacting structure. The Saturday Night Band’s “Come On Dance, Dance” picks up the tempo…followed by the brilliance of Vince Montana in his Goody Goody production “It Looks Like Love”.

“For Your Love” by Chilly gives a psychedelic spin to the Yardbird’s tune. Hugh Masekela’s “Don’t Go Lose It Baby” advises on finding your own space beyond paradigms.

«Egg Emoticon» Spotify Playlist

For the first day of Standard Time—and the unveiling of new emojis—HERE is a musical elixir for adjustment into winter.

Hapi Phace and I use the egg emoji as a mutually-decided-upon symbol that can mean “received,” “just woke up,” or sundry accord. It is a key element in the creation of digital cartouches on iMessage.

This emphasis on the egg emoji came to be because I love eggs—which I eat constantly in good health—in keeping with their implication as a symbol of birth, emergence, and creative possibility.

For our Karload of Klowns performance troupe—which will be presenting its new show, Erection Day, this Tuesday, November 6th, at 8 p.m. in the Gene Frankel Theatre at 24 Bond Street—Klown ringleader Hapi created the Egg Emoticon staff, a tapR mâché sculpture that my character, Palimpsesto, uses to indicate approval during segments.

Emoticons are a representation of human facial expression using keyboard characters: this playlist represents stages of human emotion balanced by a focus on wellness. Each song represents a character.

In keeping with the spirit of the latest Karload of Klowns show—which features apropos samples from the seminal British pop group The KLF (a name that can alternatively mean “Kopyright Liberation Front” or “Kings of Low Frequency”)—the playlist starts with “Justified & Ancient (Stand by The JAMs)”, featuring Tammy Wynette on vocals.

This song starts with the chant “All bound for Mu Mu Land,” a place synonymous in KLF lore with their Trancentral recording studio, a forum for spiritual realization. As the song “Last Train to Trancentral” explains in its LP version: “I’m going into Trancentral where I can, you understand, liberate and free the psyche, balance my mind and my body….”

On the cover photo, I am wearing a homemade KLF hat José Joaquín and I found years ago at the Urban Jungle on Knickerbocker Avenue, a Johnson buffalo plaid zip-up flannel jacket, Levi’s Engineered jeans, and ‘be happy’ frames by Sabine Be, outfitted by Artsee.

Summer Solstice with an Enchanted Tiki Room Shirt

I went to Disney World in Orlando, Florida, in 1972, and one of the first attractions I visited was the Enchanted Tiki Birds. The experience had such an impact on me…I was never the same.

Always fond of birds and flowers, I was mesmerized by the Audio-Animatronics representations of macaws; deities Hina Kuluua (goddess of rain), Rongo (god of agriculture), Maui (god of the sun) and Tangaroa (father of all gods and goddesses); and orchids, who sing and move in time with the music. 

The next year, I visited the Enchanted Tiki Room, the original version of the attraction in the Anaheim, California Disneyland. It’s been around since 1963, when all things Polynesian were in vogue. 

In this West Coast version of the Tiki Room, the building is an absolute dream, featuring a pagoda-like tower with thatched roofs and a lanai veranda where music by Martin Denny and Bud Tutmarc played in the background when I visited. Tío Babi and Vicente had given me London Phase 4 records of Hawaiian music which I absolutely adored, and so it was pure law of attraction to be immersed in this mind-blowing environment.

Being in the Tiki Room, which was designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, sparked my intuition endlessly. I wanted to live there among the birds and mythical creatures. My hair stood on end during an instrumental interlude featuring a rainstorm, lightning and wind sounds. 

Back in Puerto Rico, I decorated my bedroom with pennants, Crazy Flickers, black lights and psychedelic posters, and played the Tiki Room soundtrack LP, which I bought in Disneyland, on my dad’s floor-standing Grundig console record player, which he let me keep in my room. 

In honor of these warm memories, I was so thrilled when I found this vintage official Disneyland Hawaiian shirt from the early 70s, which features the Tiki Room characters, logo and plants. I suspect the print of the shirt was drawn by Rolly Crump, designer of the facade of It’s a Small World as well as the dear Popsie “greeting” figurines I adore so much. (Popsies came into my radar when Van told Scooter and me how he had gotten one for his brother as a gift, back in the early 60s.) 

I combined the shirt with a straw hat Van keeps around in Ocean Grove for gardening. It’s the perfect complement to the warm tones of the shirt. The ensemble is perfect for this Summer Solstice, harkening the comfort and wellness of this longest day of sun.
