The cookbook club has been a delicious adventure during August! Only a handful of friends have been actively participating, and we haven’t had a potluck yet, but nonetheless I am thoroughly enjoying the experience. Good and Cheap was a great choice and seems full of great advice for us lowly twenty somethings/grad students on tight budgets. None of the recipes were particularly groundbreaking—in fact, so many of them were made with ingredients I buy all the time anyway. I couldn’t believe I never thought of some of these!

My absolute favorites were probably the variants on breakfast: savory oatmeal, tomato eggs, and the improvised kale hash. I definitely see these dishes making their way into my regular rotations. Fingers crossed that my basil plant lives/thrives through the winter so that I can make these eggs on the regular. I also found the jacket sweet potato really delightful. My least favorite was the chana masala—too acidic. Next time, I think I’ll go for diced rather than pureed tomatoes? I’m not sure. I’ll think of something & give it another chance, because I am always in search of more things to do with chickpeas. The one dish I haven't gotten around to making yet is the polenta on p. 82, but I hope to do so later this week. 

Moving right along, for September, I am pleased to announce we’ll be cooking from The Simple Veganista! I’m not a vegan, not even a vegetarian, but I love everything about the recipes on this blog! I even got a bit ahead of myself & made a back-to-school curried cauliflower & quinoa last week from the site.
