I had already thought about this a while ago, but the main reason a character like Ariel is highly criticized is the fact that she is a teenage character at her core. Every single thing about Ariel screams the teen experience, including the desire to be seen and treated as a capable being and not just a poor little child. The movie itself brings this up at several points. If there is one thing people absolutely HATE to see is teens actually ask to be treated with the same respect they would if they were an adult. The filmmakers watched dozens of teen media for a reason. They wanted to depict how society treats teenagers and how they feel.
