There are many external motivations that influence characters but when it comes to internal motivations most people have two forces fighting inside them: desire to do the right thing, and desire to get what they want. Cartman does not have this problem because he is never once tempted to do the right thing; his internal struggle is one of determination vs. pettiness. Because his determination will let nothing stand in his way, but his pettiness allows anything to get in his way.
