This whale draped itself in a giant kelp patty and brought it over to the boat for us to see up close! For the week we saw FIVE different species of whale: Blue, Fin, Humpback, Minke, and BELUGA! And the species we saw the most?!? BLUE WHALES! We’ve seen at least one Blue Whale every day for a week, and on about 80% of our total trips during that period! #Repost from the incredible @dolphindronedom // --- Wait for the tail! Finally saw a Blue Whale lift it’s tail last week at San Clemente Island! By my unofficial count over the years, it seems only 10-15% of Blue Whales will show their tails on sounding dives, making each time it happens a special “fluke”. 😉😏😊 While I was enroute to a Great White Shark trip many years ago to Guadelupe Island, I was fortunate to observe Blue Whales at the surface! It was an amazing thing to see! These drone videos are truly incredible! It is my hope and dream that once people observe these amazing ocean wonders we will have a bigger force to stop killing everything! Many countries still kill these beautiful sentient creatures! I think my obsession with whales began with my boyhood obsession with dinosaurs. Like many young kids, I was so fascinated by the idea of a world full of massive powerful animals. Little did I know that one day I’d grow up and get to work along side the largest animal to ever exist. #Repost from the incredible @dolphindronedom @download.ins --- BLUE WHALES - From their size, to their turquoise blue glow under the water, perhaps no animal serves as a better metaphor for the ocean as the Blue Whale. Both the leviathan and the ocean elicit a sense of wonder and serenity and power. When you think of the ocean, the first color that comes to mind is BLUE. Images like these were unthinkable not long ago, as not only did we not have the technology, but the whales themselves were absent. There was once as many as 300,000 Blue Whales, and during the latter half of the 20th century their populations were so decimated that some scientists felt they were functionally extinct. I’m overjoyed that I am able to share these moments with you all, as the more people that can appreciate these animals, the better chance we have at protecting their ocean home moving forward. I grew up in middle of the US with the nearest ocean thousands of miles away, but I still remember the first time I watched the original Blue Planet and became fascinated with this species. #Repost from my amazing friend @dolphindronedom @download.ins --- While Blue Whales seem relatively comfortable around boats that are watching them respectfully, they rarely show any interest in us humans at all. I’ve only had a handful of encounters where a Blue Whale makes a concerted effort to come over and check out a boat, but last Thursday was definitely one of those moments!
