These old album reviews always crack me up. I think I named all of these songs. (Seven years pass since the last Gone album and Greg releases The Criminal Mind during the same year that saw his 'solo' efforts Getting Even and Dick. The difference between those albums and this? No vocals! Recorded during the same session as Dick, Criminal's production is identical; great sounding guitars, chunky, funky bass (courtesy Steve Sharp) and weird, reverb gated drums by Greg "Drummer" Moore. Stylistically, it's not far removed from the 80's Gone material; somewhat funky, pretty heavy and fairly noisy. There are some surprises, like "Pump Room" which finds Gone moving in on bizarre Slayer sounds and "Spankin' Plank" which posits what Black Flag might have sounded like as a major label, heavy MTV rotation, pop rock band! While Sharp is a great bassist, Moore's main function is that of a time keeper - he certainly doesn't suck - but he's not the powerhouse that Sim Cain was. Judging by how many years he'd go on to collaborate with Ginn (ending just recently following the disastrous 2013 Black Flag / Good for You tour), he was exactly what Ginn wanted in a drummer. Ginn himself is as inventive as ever, a fountain of buzzing, edgy riffs and abrasive, scattershot leads with more emphasis on counterpoint. Pretty decent outing, probably for diehards only - what with the awful drum sound. Highlights: "Punch Drunk" "P.S. Was Wrong" "Pump Room" "Smoking Gun In Wasco" "Spankin' Plank" "Big Deck" "Ankle Strap" "Unknown Caliber" (another poppy song that gets surprisingly abrasive courtesy a guitar synth) #sstrecords #goneband #gregginn #punkjazz #jazzpunk #instrumentalmusic #funky #criminalminds #spankinplanks (at North Long Beach, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BugdYXSAQxP/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=tx8ebqn8gow1
