Old Mine Road in Montague NJ runs along the Delaware River. It is one of the oldest roads in the United States. Reports Place this road dating back to the early 1600 as a dutch mining road. It spans from Kingston and connects to route I80 in NJ. Along Old Mine Road are many points of interest. The Depue House, The Van Campen Inn, A couple really old Cemeteries, Walpack Center (an abandoned town) And numerous abandoned Mine Shafts. The Van Campen Inn once was a safe house for Generals in the Civil War, one of which was George Washington. One of the old Cemeteries is dated back to the early 1700's and is located up in the woods not too far from the Van Campen Inn. In the Mid 1900's The are was bought out by the government with plans to dam the Delaware River near Tocks Island. The dam was never built and all the homes were left to remain abandoned. Previous investigations had brought us to the F. StollHouse Which he had investigasted prior. Parts of the Old Mine Road still seem to be stuck in the early years as many people do not use the narrow dirt road. So travel on the road does require caution and permission from the Parks Service. Numerous small wars were fought in the area between the indians and early settlers. As well as during the civil war.
THIS IS 1.5 MILES FROM MY HOUSE.
