Pathfinder Online has been under development by Goblinworks for over four years. The game launched a Kickstarter on November 27, 2012, and was funded with over 674,627 pounds (one million dollars) on January 14, 2013. Recently the CEO of Goblinworks, Lisa Stevens, announced in her end of the year address the possibility of the game transferring hands to a new owner. (moreā¦)
Goblinworks, a company established by Paizo Publishing, Inc. to develop a massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, was recently forced to lay off most of their staff in order to stay in business and continue work on the game. Pathfinder Online has been in the works for some time now, with a successful Kickstarter and open enrollment in the alphaā¦
As some of you might know, Pathfinder Online has got a free 15-day trial (>click here<) for people who want to give it a shot. As a Pathfinder player and a games-developer, I thought Iād give their early version a shot and see how it plays.
The short version: itās in a really unfinished state, so much so that I will walk away and come back later, but already shows promise.Ā
Engine Troubles
Iāll have to be honest; even as someone who plays around withĀ works on prototypes professionally, I found it hard to play. Some of you will probably have no issues with it, but it reminds me of a few open-source MMOs I have played, maybe a graphically-improved version of Runescape in some ways.
Maybe it was my PC or being in the UK, but there was a lot of lag; I saw both input lag (I press a button and it takes half a second for anything to happen) and server lag (I perform an action in the game and it takes a second or two for NPCs to react) almost constantly. That made it hard to play.
Itās also not pretty... Iām assuming that we are still seeing placeholder graphics, but the animations (and lack of animations) are really jarring at times. I play a number of older games (one of my current projects is a MUD, so yeah, I am going back to the birth of the MMORPG here) and good animation, no matter the model-quality, makes a big difference. This will obviously change in time, but itās a sticking point for me at this current point in time.
TL;DR - the lack of response makes it hard to play, but the basics are there.Ā
Always Follow Directions
Ah, tutorials... I am sure many of us remember the days when we were expected to read a thick manual before starting to play a new game, but those days are over. MMOs especially need to ease you in quickly and add complexity over time.
Pathfinder Online comes with a new user guide which is more or less compulsory. This is beta-tester stuff, lists of commands and reminders of things to do and things not to do, masquerading as early-access. And yes, following instructions is important because I got myself into trouble by not paying close attention to what little tutorial there is.Ā
If you do decide to test play Pathfinder Online, read everything they give you and donāt get ahead of yourself; when the tutorial asks you to buy a single feat, buy that feat and then read the next tutorial step. Just because it lets you do something does not mean that you will not mess up the tutorial system by doing it and get stuck.
TL;DR - surviving the tutorial requires a certain degree of self-control and patience; do what you are told and only what you are told.
No Chainmail Bikinis?
Visually, this game is nothing special yet. As I mentioned earlier, the engine and the art are works in progress which will no doubt be upgraded over time, but I did notice a very Paizo-inspired tendency for womenās armour to be similar to menās. No plunging necklines that I could see (either in-game or in screenshots and videos) or boob-windows or mysterious exposed vitals.Ā
And certainly no chainmail bikinis...
Mechanical Excellence
Considering the source material, a game which is basically an upgraded version of D&D 3.5, Pathfinder Online is not D&D. I mean, it deliberately (and deftly) diverges from many of the D&D concepts which other MMOs seem to take for granted. My background is in design, so I look at the mechanics and I have nothing but respect for the design team.
If youāve ever played The Elder Scrolls Online, youāll have seen a game which rejects the World of Warcraft template common to maybe 90% of MMORPGs on the market and thatās how Pathfinder Online feels to me; itās not WoW, itās not tryingĀ to be WoW and it probably wonāt appeal to the led-by-the-hand WoW player-base.
There are no classes. Well, there are some underlying āclass-likeā mechanics inherent in the feat-system, but they are not exclusive and you could mix rogue skills with cleric spell-casting if you wanted to without needing to multi-class or take (many) other elements which donāt match your vision of the character.
Over time, weāll see the code-base upgraded and improved, weāll see the visual style go from the current place-holders to release-quality art, but the core mechanics need to be there from the start and Iām happy to say that they are. Maybe they will need a little tweaking, but thatās all.
TL;DRĀ - the designers know their stuff and I can see where they are going; also, I approve of where they are going.
Conclusions
Honestly? I lasted an hour, a little longer than it took to download and install the game. I saw enough to make two judgements.
I canāt play it in the current beta state, it would drive me mad.
Once the game is ready, I think it will be great fun.
They freely admit on the website that what they have is a barely-out-of-alpha minimum viable product. What that means is that the game is playable, but not much more. You are buying into a combination of open beta and early-access game to help them fund the development of the game, not a polished game.Ā
Personally, I dislike early access games and that might lead to a certain bias, but thatās mostly about quality issues and a free trial certainly makes me feel better about the whole thing.
If you can handle playing an unfinished game, I would encourage you to play the 15-day trial and make up your own minds, but I personally will be waiting for Open Enrollment in early 2016 before I make up my mind. Right now, the thrill of being an early adopter is not enough to drag me away from existing MMOs. Next year, I have a feeling I will change my mind...

Pathfinder Online Kickstarter Hits $1 Million Funding Goal
Seattle-based Goblinworks, the studio behind Pathfinder Online, announced that the Kickstarter campaign for the game has surpassed its $1 million funding goal today, just five hours before the deadline.
The crowdfunding campaign was launched back in November last year to raise funds to develop Pathfinder Online. Goblinworks takes player feedbacks seriously, calling contributors who pledge over $100 ācrowdforgers,ā which means they will have full access to Pathfinder Onlineās early beta event and whatās more, crowdforgers will be heavily engaged with the development of the game. That is to say, they are able to give suggestions and vote on game features while the developers will prioritize development of the popular ones.
Based on the titular tabletop RPG, Pathfinder Online is a hybrid sandbox MMO where characters explore, develop, find adventure and dominate a wilderness frontier in a land of sword and sorcery. The Pathfinder world is high-fantasy in the tradition of epics like The Lord of the Rings, Conan, the Wheel of Time and Game of Thrones.
Powered by the cross-platform Unity game engine, Pathfinder Online is slated to enter into beta on PC and Mac in June 2014 with a final release estimated January 2016.
You can head over toĀ Pathfinder Onlineās Kickstarter pageĀ to learn more details about the game.

Pathfinder Online Employs Unity Engine, Hitting $600,000 Now
Earlier today, Goblinworks, the developer of the fantasy sandbox MMO Pathfinder Online, Ā announced that they will employ Unity engine to continue the development. In addition, there are going to be several follow up announcements related to this big news and maybe with some real surprises inside.
On the other hand, Pathfinder Onlineās Kickstarter campaign is now entering the home stretch with only eight days to go. Currently, with the help of almost 5,000 backers, the project has raised more than $600,000 with the goal to hit its $ 1,000,000 target. In memory of the milestone, the dev team revealed the Bugbear Sniper battle miniature and a howling deathbringer thatāll be available at "Crowdforger level $700,000."
The developers claimed that Pathfinder Online is going to be a totally different game from other traditional MMOs youāve played in the past. As described, Pathfinder Online is a fantasy sandbox MMO based on the Pathfinder tabletop game. It uses a unique process called "Crowdforging" to determine what features are implemented in the game, in what order.
